I believe it is time to ban advertising. Now, I realize that much of the internet depends on advertising for its revenue, but that is offset by the fact that I don't give a fuck

@ReticentTurnip personally, I want more agressive #Adblocker that'll literally filter all #ads on sight to be come the norm so that #advertising - espechally online - can only work to attract stupid SEO-oriented #bots.

@kkarhan @ReticentTurnipBan ads, and not just on the web!Offline as well. The "digital out of home" nonconsensual ad mafia has taken over my hometown and plastered it with ultra-bright screens.it's not a sight you would like to behold, let alone be exposed to it every day without ever being asked.I hate and despise them with every fiber of my soul for what they've done to our cities, and to me, and to society ...

@kkarhan @ReticentTurnip And I would like to rant less about this, but I'm forcibly confronted with it every day, such is their power ...It's a complete stranglehold, they've corrupted the 4 most important political parties.Ban all ads.

@kkarhan @ReticentTurnip (How far this corruption goes: city senate is *suing* on behalf of the advertisers against direct democracy to keep the nonconsensual ads at all cost https://chaos.social/@quincy/110088198323504511 )

@quincy @kkarhan @ReticentTurnip there's an emergency circuit-breaker in the bottom of all those panels, the metal plate covering them usually opens with a Torx key or other standard tool (in case the Fire Brigade need to get access). There might be a risk of being nicked for turning the power off, but activists in France and other countries have already done so...

@quincy @kkarhan @ReticentTurnip in 1970s the Ipswich Society (a fairly middle class activist group) successfully got old style advertising hoardings (which were mostly for cigarettes) banned from much of the town and its still the case today, Ipswich has way fewer ads than many similarly sized towns. One of the biggest employers at the time was Imperial Tobacco Limited (who had a factory in town) and they still managed to push back against the ads..

@vfrmedia> in 1970s the Ipswich Society ... successfully got old style advertising hoardings (which were mostly for cigarettes) banned from much of the townI can't remember the details but the doco The Corporation featured a city (in Brazil maybe) that had banned ads from all public places. It can be done. Ads a form of pollution, just as much as smokey fumes or loud noise is. Especially for those of us with sensory issues. @quincy @kkarhan @ReticentTurnip

@strypeyAustralia's capital city Canberra has a billboard ban (mostly). Pity that the politicians who work there don't spread the love. https://www.abc.net.au/news/specials/curious-canberra/2017-06-19/why-doesnt-canberra-have-billboard-advertising/8622186@vfrmedia @quincy @kkarhan @ReticentTurnip

@strypey The city in Brazil must have been São Paolo, a famous example.I agree - the sensory pollution by ads must be recognized for what it is and banned. It should be a no-brainer, really, for anyone with any empathy, even if not everyone suffers to the same extent, to support a ban ...Because there is also no upside to it! It's purely detrimental to the public.@vfrmedia @kkarhan @ReticentTurnip

@quincyCanberra is a planned city, so there's a lot about it that is what you would expect from early 20th century utopian urbanists. Works about as well as any other utopian ideas from the early 20th century. @strypey @vfrmedia @kkarhan @ReticentTurnip
