They don't migrate (mostly, we have mild winters), and parks were a mess. Birth control, cull, what to do? A town in New Brunswick, "don't kill them! We'll take a bunch!" So, transport trucks full of geese were sent east. A few years later, from NB, "the geese are a problem, what shall we do?!" :)

@StillIRise1963 @Adam_Cadmon1 @MPgh @APBBlue @statmonkey I think there was a lot of "you folk do not understand what you're getting into." :)I'm not sure how the population now compares to then, but I do remember it being difficult to find park grass to walk though without stepping in the pellets, and if geese were flying overhead, you worried about being directly underneath. It's possible that the growing coyote population has been helping out, as it hasn't seemed that bad for a while.

I was like, “Goose, you are gonna fucking die,” and waded in. This dude was trying to drown her w/ her hand in his beak deep underwater. I only saw her feet floating to the surface. Next memory is back up on the beach & lifeguard finally coming to the rescue to take daughter’s pulse.DNR killed the murderer the next day.

If I hadn’t had an umbrella with me, I’m not sure how that would have ended, but opening it in the critter’s face several times seemed to freak him out enough that I escaped with most of my dignity and all of my bones intact. (Apparently swans have been known to break bones by striking people with their wings. I swear, I am not making this up.)

@qurlyjoe Years ago, I was friends with a couple of academics. She was a museum curator, he was a translator? They were DINK (Dual-income-no-kids) and would often spend time going to state parks and trail hiking.They told me about a time they went to Yellowstone one year and a women was trying to force her children to stand in front of an Elk or Bison or some other "cut cow animal". @qurlyjoe Those are muddy waters. I know folk who've grown up in abusive childhoods who've made efforts to be better parents. Studies have shown that strict parents cause as much damage as permissive parents. @Adam_Cadmon1 I don't think folk should be penalized for their childhoods. Denying them or making it harder to be parents would be retraumatizing them. There are very few ideal parents & all parents of newborns should be given resources to help them. I've taken kids of family and friends for a day to give parents a break.
