People who dislike cats seem to have this belief that cats don't come when they're called. In reality, while some cats (like some dogs) won't respond that way, most cats I've known definitely will come when called. The thing is, unlike with a *command* to a dog, a cat will put your *recommendation* on its queue, and depending on the size of the queue it may be acted on immediately, or later. It's basically a scheduling issue.

@lauren I called my cats by running the can opener. Worked every time.

@lauren scheduling and priorities and where their mood is at the moment. It's like dealing with a lot of sysadmins. You just have to be patient and not too demanding and soon enough you'll come up in the list

@lauren Also, if I may add: They prefer "pspsps" to names, preferably with food involved.

@lauren Ours both come for the most part. But it is clearly an earned thing, they love and trust us and they know we don't call them for no reason. And so the accept the invitation when we offer it. Honestly our corgi has WAY crappier recall than our Maine Coon cat.

@laurenMy cat is very obedient in that. She likes to be in the same room as me and will absolutely "shadow me" when I am doing things around the house. If I call her, unless she's asleep - she'll likely come to me. Sometimes she takes some coaxing.

@laurenMostly agree. It is, however, a function of mutual affection and respect.Treat a cat like a dog and try ordering it around,(s)he will pretty see through the control structure.Call her/him for a reason, and her/him will come almost any time, if not completely distracted by food or potential food "to play with" (e.g. birds) or other animals, etc.

@lauren True. My cat comes when I use my nice voice only when he wants. When I use my harsher voice, he comes running - probably to see what's gone wrong.

@lauren We had outdoor cats when I was a kid (we lived in a very rural area), and they would usually come when called. Especially if it was dinner time. 😅

@lauren Plus, cats may have a preference. There's a name you call them by when it's fussing time and a name they associate (possibly wrongly, but there you go) with Bad Stuff, like going to the v-ee-tee.

@lauren I think it's a predator v. helper thing. Sight-hounds (hunting dogs) like greyhounds behave very much like cats - they have their own interests and desires, and you are just part of that list. They can be very affectionate and caring but not normally desperate to please. For non-predator dogs (retrievers, farm dogs, etc) it's important to them that they work with their people. They are much more focused on what the people want.

@laurenThey come reliably when you call. You just need to call when they're about to come. A little practice will get you there.
