There seems to be an odd amount of nostalgia, or maybe curiosity, for the TRS-80 MC-10 today. This was a cut-down TRS-80 Color Computer meant to compete with the Timex-Sinclair 1000 (the U.S. version of the ZX81). But the MC-10 didn't set the world on fire, even after cutting the price to $49.95. #retrocomputing https://dfarq.homeip.net/trs-80-mc-10-radio-shacks-cheapest-computer/

@siliconundergro I have one that I picked up about 7 yeas ago during my more active, "acquire all the things" phase. I was familiar with it because a friend of mine had one when they were a current thing. I put a composite mod and some other upgrades in the one I got just to make it a bit more usable.

@paradroyd @siliconundergro I kind of regret not getting one when they were still reasonably priced.

@paradroyd that's a really nice MC-10 setup! Putting a composite mod in one definitely makes it more usable today.

@Cloudscout @paradroyd I'm in the same boat, I grabbed some stuff but not others. I got a CoCo 2 at a very good price but passed on a boxed MC-10 around 15 years ago, along with countless Timex-Sinclair 1000s and TI-99/4as.

@siliconundergro @Cloudscout @paradroyd I remember buying a lot containing two TI-99-4As, both working, for $15 on shopgoodwill. Those were the days...

@duhproject @siliconundergro @Cloudscout I used to get a lot of stuff like that at Gateway..that;s where that Mega ST2 came from. I think that it was $35 fully working -with- the keyboard. I moved the color SC1224 (JVC) color monitor over from a 520ST that I have, and bought the mono SM124 separately later. I put the monitors on a "monitor master" switcher so that I can boot it up in either mode without moving anything.

@paradroyd I love these gifs you do, its very subtle and I like the slight screen shimmer and prerequisite blinking cursor in the gif..

@ericgus Thanks. That's pretty much completely built into my Google Pixel phone. I just take a motion picture, which is just basically some kind of multi-frame Jpeg, and it has an on-board "export to GIF" option.Of course it helps to have source material and RGB lighting to point it at.CRTs and various types of RGB lighting work well with this kind of thing.

@paradroyd @duhproject @Cloudscout that's a great score! I only ever saw one ST in the wild somehow, very long ago, and the price didn't strike me as great even then. Of course I wish I'd grabbed it but you know what they say about hindsight.

@siliconundergro @paradroyd I still need to make/install a composite mod for mine, but it is such a neat computer. I did do a couple other mods for it including installing an additional 4kB of RAM for the high res video mode. As well swapped control and shift as a personal preference.

@ChartreuseK @siliconundergro Nice..and yes..it is an interesting computer. It feels like more than what it's spec sheet makes it out to be.It also doesn't take up much space, which is a nice bonus.I also added an MCX128 to mine not long after I got it. It provides a more sophisticated BASIC, drive emulation over a serial line, and 128K of RAM https://thezippsterzone.com/2018/05/08/mcx-128/
