Whole Foods, owned by Amazon, now has biometric handprint scanning to pay for your groceries. When I expressed my concern, the feller behind the counter said, “It’s just like the biometric scanner on your phone…” “Um, no, it’s not,” I replied. “Because THAT biometric data is on MY device, not yours.”He shrugged in response. I don’t advise you to go this route, friends. Not until there are more legal standards and protections in place to protect consumers. #privacy #security

@thetechtutor This is optional though, right? As in, nobody is forcing people to pay for groceries this way (hopefully)?

@topher @thetechtutor fully optional and not even much more convenient than scanning your in-app Prime QR code then using Apple Pay like a normal POS.

@tcook Those all sound like things I would never use either. Why do I need Apple or any other company as an additional intermediary between my bank or credit card issuer and the payee?Honestly all this stuff both scares me and also feels extremely unnecessary and just another thing that can go wrong. I've never used any such digital wallet type thing - Apple's or any other company's.@thetechtutor

@thetechtutor Biometric security, the security that almost always gets easily defeated/exploited whenever it shows up on TV.

@Zauberin @thetechtutor the worst part is that half the dumb things they do in movies to break biometrics *actually works IRL*. It has the really really dumb security model where you need to keep the adversary away from the reader, but it's also supposed to be front line security. If you need high security with biometrics you pretty much must put an armed guard next to the reader to deter shenanigans.

@Natanael_L @Zauberin @thetechtutor It was years ago, but the episode of Mythbusters where they literally photocopied a fingerprint and got it to work on the fingerprint scanner should have killed the market for good.

@thetechtutor Amazon has been trying to get folks to use these at their bookstores for a few years. A year or so ago, I asked an employee if anyone ever uses one. He just gave me a little smile and shook his head no.

@thetechtutor also the security model is vastly different, biometrics is too easy to copy and you only need to successfully copy any one print out of a large pool instead of targeting a specific person. Or maybe you don't copy anyone at all, but instead maybe you can abuse the inherent error margins in processing;https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2017/05/hacking_fingerp.html

@Natanael_L @thetechtutor What an interesting way to harvest fingerprints of a young, left leaning demographic on behalf of an anti-democracy corporation like Amazon. Guess who funded the campaigns of the Tennessee GOP and Speaker Cameron Sexton? @thetechtutor btw as long as you're not using a privacy friendly custom rom on your phone that finger print scanner actually belongs to google.

@thetechtutor what I dislike most about Whole Foods is how they give you a discount if you use your own bag. It’s so virtue signally and manipulatively woke.

I guess I don't view it as voting. I just believe that, by supporting companies with horrible practices, I am also party to those practices, and party to actively making this world worse. If there were enough people who didn't spend money with them, though, they would feel the impact. It would just take a lot of people. The most common reaction I've had when I say I refuse to shop with Amazon has been, "I wish I was that strong." Which I guess means people want to shop elsewhere but let themselves be seduced by the prices or convenience?@LexYeen @thetechtutor

@Npars01 @Natanael_L It’s not matter of left or right. It’s a matter of sensitive data and not-ready-for-prime-time technology. Do you REALLY think Amazon is the only corporation rolling out this tech? Do you really think a company like WalMart isn’t salivating at how to make paying for goods as easy and seamless as possible?Cuz they’ve already failed with their employees at this VERY thing: https://www.biometricupdate.com/202101/walmart-reaches-10m-settlement-in-biometric-privacy-suit-brought-by-employees

@thetechtutor Ew.Why would I want to touch something when paying? I'm very happy just waving my watch phone or card at things...although contactless payment can make you look like a real simpleton if you try to use it in the wrong place. "honey, are you trying to cast a spell or something? You gotta put your card in the slot..."

@thetechtutor The question is why on Earth would you try to make a cashier justify this for you? They are not paid enough to give a shit and probably have received no training as to the why of it.

@thetechtutor >legal standards and protectionsLike those'll be of any use after the fact, or if you don't even know that they're using your bio data for anything nefarious. Better to not use it at all, and anathematize those who put this shit out there.

@thetechtutor what really annoys me is the rapidly increasing trend for businesses to not accept cash. Some are not accepting $100 bills, others are outright not accepting cash at all, one cashier said I prefer credit when checking out unless I had exact change. I’ve experienced both recently.
