In four months of having full text search, we have not received any complaints of abuse or concerns from any local users or users across federation.Now, the discussions of this out in the open have been extreme and highly debated but I feel it's time to share that I have not experienced any of the "beefs" with search and I've learned that I think we have more problems without search.With search, we have an auto-moderator bot that can look for keywords and surface posts to moderators for review.With search we can watch for trends and boost posts that otherwise are hard to discover.With search you can discover people on their profiles because they have facts about them beyond just their username.With search, we could do cool things like saved searches as lists or saved searches as advanced UI panes.Y'all write amazing content that begs to be discovered and y'all deserve that discovery remains in your hands as user options to opt/in out and not give it to Google.

@supernovae I don't understand why anyone wants to be in the town square but also wants an invisibility cloak. More discovery tools are desperately needed.

I'd compare it to how someone might want to be *in* the town square and say in a normal voice to those immediately around them "that guy shouting on the soapbox over there is annoying". Technically "public speech", but in practice it's only people nearby who'll hear it. It might be passed on a few people back (boosts), but it's unlikely to reach the subject.But if soapbox guy has had the square bugged (namesearching)...

@katzenberger I'm sorry, but if I'm chatting with a friend I use Matrix. You're trying to make the argument that "chatting with a friend" through personal ads in the local newspaper should somehow be considered private. Because that's what making a public post on Mastodon is.

@mike Being in a public space does *not* imply that your words should be indexed and made available to everybody through search.No matter how "convenient" it may be for others to be able to search each and every conversation content, in hindsight.No matter how many surveillance fanatics try to implement that, world-wide.@hughster @supernovae

@troed I understand what you say and would like to point you to the fact that the person I replied to, not me, introduced the metaphor of the town square.My intent was to highlight the absurdities that most would never accept on a real town square, but many acccept in a digital space.I consider private vs. public not a binary distinction. I get that many people feel uncomfortable with fuzzy situations. Still I don't believe in "resistance is futile". Who doesn't fight has already lost.
