I went to the eye doctor this afternoon, and when he opened the door and saw me wearing a mask, he asked if I'd like him to wear one. And I said, "Yes, that would be great. Thank you!"Why can't this just be the default? Common courtesy. It's not that hard.#CovidIsNotOver

@grammargirl I work adjacent to a health system and that's our official policy! (They just stopped requiring masks everywhere in the past week or two.)That said, I had big problems with my glasses fogging up during exams when I was wearing a mask, and was glad when they said it was OK to remove it because we were all recently vaccinated. Did you have any problems like that?

@waltman I tried a lot of different masks before I found one that doesn't fog my glasses. I get mine from MASKC, but I think it largely depends on the shape of your face, and everyone is a little different. https://www.shopmaskc.com/collections/kn95-masks

@grammargirl Those are nice! We've got a stash of regular surgical-style masks at work that I've been using, but I'll keep those in mind if I need to get on an airplane.

@grammargirl That’s a start at least but I’d hope that a medical professional who gets a lot of older people would be wearing a mask by default and asking/requiring patients to as well.

@dharrison I completely agree, and I was happy (and a bit surprised) to recently see that everyone in my GP's office is still masking, but I've lost hope that it will ever be that way again everywhere.

@grammargirl While I wish more people would mask, I've been actually having a lot more good interactions where people offer to mask when they see mine than bad ones. I guess I'm lucky to be in an area that was pretty good about masking to begin with. Wishing for more considerate people for you!

@grammargirl @waltman my experience with KN-95s (which is limited) is that the ones I tried are *not* almost-N95s, they are deluxe blue-baggies. Not nearly as all-day no-problem can-still-see-just-fine comfortable as any of my favorite N95s like the 3M 9205 Aura

@grammargirl Personnel at medical offices and clinics here are all still masking and asking patients to mask, too. I'm glad, but our area was very resistant to masking during the worst of the pandemic.

@grammargirl I was nearly taken aback by this the other day. In complete good faith. I had to pause for a second and realise this, so I didn’t decline out of politeness and not logic (or fear, as it would possibly be in another scenario).

@grammargirl I've experienced this a few times and always said "no, that's ok", and then wondered if I should've said yes.Last time was when I got my last jab; I was thinking: "it's a nice gesture, but we're in a pharmacy with a bunch of other people who aren't wearing masks; if anyone is sick, the air is already full of their breath ... it's not like one of them putting on a mask will make any difference *now*."It just underlines the futility and absurdity of the current (lack of) policy.

@grammargirl It's a mystery to me why and how something as simple as wearing a mask or not turned into such a politicised issue in America. Also why Americans get so worked up about unisex toilets (most are, here in France - it's really not a problem, and there's certainly nothing political to it).

@grammargirl It's the bare minimum, really! And it's not nearly enough, because the physician, nurses and previous patients would have had ample opportunity to pollute the air before you came in.

@joopdelfijn You're right, of course. I was unhappy because the tech didn't wear a mask while she was getting me ready in the room. But exposure time matters, and the tech was with me ~2 minutes, whereas the doctor was with me ~15. Plus, his face was inches from mine almost the whole time. I would have been freaking out if he hadn't worn a mask.He also sneezed in the middle of the exam. Even if he didn't have COVID, I may have been protected from a cold!@stveje

@stveje I hear what you're saying. The way I think of it is that the closer someone is to you, and the more time you're spending with them, the more it matters. If 5 people in the pharmacy have COVID, but they aren't near you or they just pass you for 5 seconds, it probably doesn't matter. But if you're in a tiny injection room with a tech right next to you for 3 minutes, and that one person is spewing virus particles, it may matter. It's a numbers game.

@grammargirl @stveje I know, and I'm sorry: it was not my intention to scare you. I think that his polite offer to wear a mask probably made a big difference in your case, especially if you could wear a mask yourself as well.It is really beyond me that this way of protecting patients is not common practice.

@grammargirl That's a very good point. It's not always easy to figure out, especially in the moment, what the right thing to do is. That's the problem with a policy of just letting everyone figure it out/decide for themselves: not everyone who tries to do the right thing will actually get it right, and most people will just do what's easiest, or what everyone else is doing. That's fine with many things, but not with things like this.

@stveje Agreed! I wasn't going to ask even though I wanted to because I was afraid I wouldn't get the best possible care if I pissed them off, and there aren't a lot of doctors to choose from in my area. The whole time driving there I was debating with myself which would be the bigger risk, and it's stupid we have to think about that at all.

@grammargirl I am surprised that medical staff and practitioners stopped masking, given their situation. I mean they're around lots of sick people all the time. It seems like covid is "officially" over, even though it's not really.
