       New machine day at Warsaw Hackerspace - we got an Avia FND32 milling machine. Getting it inside involved putting it on its side, then standing it back up.

       Next up: complete disassembly for cleaning and overhaul. This is a 1972 machine that sat unused in a warehouse for the last 15 years, and got a bit of rain on it at some point. All of the oil and grease inside probably turned to a useless goop long ago, there’s a lot of surface rust and some internal spaces got water in them, that mixed into the oil and turned into forbidden nutella.

       First order of business: removing the upper ram. Being the topmost section of the machine, it got the most water on it, forming large amounts of rust and seizing up the bearing surfaces. The ram is thus well and truly stuck. Luckily, the rust does not extend deep into the interface between castings and thus will not impact future performance of the machine after cleanup. Still, a significant amount of percussive persuasion was needed to get it moving.

       Now removing the lower ram, which is heavier and more complicated. On the other hand, it slides freely on undamaged bearing surfaces and requires little force to move.

       A foreshadowing of what’s yet to come: the power feed/rapid traverse gearbox is also chock full of forbidden nutella. This will be fun to take apart and put back together.
