@louis @Gargron You would think that Mastodon developers would take the time to add basic bayesian filtering. It would work very well since instance administrators already deal with identifying spam and ham. You could just tag and update the model, the same way as email.Obviously priorities lie elsewhere.

@louis does it also mean itโ€™ll be impossible to follow someone on mastodon.social and see their updates in the home tab?

@oatmeal You still can follow, and you still see their updates. Limit will make posts from accounts at this domain invisible to anyone who isn't following them. But no account can send you posts that you do not follow. This is temporary until the spam wave is over.

@galdor Spot on. My old favourite CRM114 was getting 99.87% accuracy in 2002. This is *not* a hard problem. @louis @Gargron

@svw @louis @Gargron Yes I remember getting similar good result with a trivial filter developed as an exercise when I was in college. And that was a long time ago.The well known "A Plan for Spam" by @paulg (http://www.paulgraham.com/spam.html) still works.Paul if you are reading this, your paper was a lot of fun the first time I read it and implemented the algorithm, thank you!

@louis @Gargron defederation is such an extreme option, admins should only use it in cases of clearly malicious or negligent instances. Imagine if network operators acted like "hey I am gonna black hole your AS because we have received spam from this IP of yours a couple of hours ago" and then you cut communication for hundreds of thousands of people...

@louis @galdor @svw @paulg @Gargron He sounds like someone who only used Fediverse for his own gain and wouldn't hesitate to defederate his server after becoming popular enough.

@louis ๐Ÿค” If the waves are happening every week, and nothing is done to prevent then, are they really ever "over"?

@downey I had a larger discussion on the topic today on the Mastodon Discord. There is no real insight there and in the end the discussion is stalled with the argument "If you don't like it, just defederate Mastodon.social".Gargron, as usual, stayed out of the discussion. Probably a good decision given that the only person that contributed to spam-fighting tools for Mastodon was kicked and their PRs deleted. That's what someone wrote in the discussion, I did not verify that claim.
