Instead of copyright being something that benefits corporations, what if it can be used in a way that benefits the original creator of a work and their family?

The idea of my characters going into the public domain is a bit scary. Then again, it scares me to think about a corporation getting a hold of it and butchering it like we've seen happen to Tolkien's work. Then people start to associate that with your characters and work, this corporation makes a profit on that and people will defend this butchery of your work. There are people out there that only watch TV or films, they never read the novels, they never see your actual work. How is that passing on the culture of your work?

@sim From a creator's pov, every person interprets your characters in their own way. Head canon and all that. So for me, putting characters into the public domain or copyleft is nothing scary to me. Imo anyway.

@Zach777 I still think it is scary putting your characters out there in a way that people can take them and misinterpret them, can butcher their character rather than honouring them. But it is a risk you make when you go public with your work. I also think it is okay to find that scary or to not find it scary. But then again, I have spent a long time with my characters and I've gotten sentimental with them over time. I don't like to see them butchered.

If my writing ever became popular and gained a fanbase, I probably wouldn't read fanfiction for my stories or characters.
