$2000 smartphones are nuts. $1000 smartphones are only half as nuts, but still nuts.

@laurenMy rule: never spend more than $10 on a phone.Corollary: I don’t have a phone.

@lauren In January I tried to buy a $500 smartphone but they told me it was $600. So they sold me a $900 phone for $100 and gave me a $400 watch for free. I'm not even joking.

@theLastTheorist Yeah, the lunacy around carrier-linked discounts and such is dramatic.

@atanas They're not terribly useful in most cases after being stolen, since they can be pretty effectively disabled remotely in many cases. Not to say there aren't elaborate workarounds for the really skilled crooks.

@atanas However, usually they just need them long enough to try extract cryptocurrency wallets and such if they can unlock a weak lock.

@lauren This was Verizon, but I think the deal was that Google was basically buying out iPhones to get people on their system. I had a broken 3-year-old XR, which was good for $800 off the Pixel 7 Pro. (All I had wanted was an old Pixel 6a.) The Google watch was a last minute thing but it's such a bad product that it's worse less than $0 (certainly less than the $5/month connection fee).

@lauren I just smashed my phone, so I'll be picking up a $300 pixel 6a to replace it.

@lauren Does the US have a flood of cheapish Chinese phones running pretty much stock Android? Oppo, TCL and so on?

@lauren well I bought an (obviously used) iPhone 8 last week for $120. I don’t need all the bells and whistles. 😊

@lauren I buy all my phones. Have never paid more than $250 CDN. UMIDIGI is my current one. I find the prices of premium phones ridiculous as well.
