So friends, are we all marking/grading student papers? Are we having fun yet.At this time of year, I have to remind myself that, although we gripe and moan, it is the students who have the harder and more stressful job, which is trying to show us what they have learned.I have always appreciated this little photo from a 1960s #Hungarian #communist-era publication depicting a despairing #student.

@MagdaTeter Are you, like many of us, apparently, finding that it is getting harder to assign heavier reading loads and challenging texts?

@CitizenWald I try not to exceed 30-35 po per class that meets twice/week. Sometimes I do, but then I let students choose different readings so there's always someone who read something. For once/week seminar try not to assign more than 50-60pp.I focus readings on primary sources with a secondary source and then structure assignments around each type of sources.

@MagdaTeter Very interesting. I think I need to start moving in that direction, too--except for what I call "book classes," in which we plough through a bunch of monographs & need to cover a great many pages per day in order to get through (but I train them to do that).Because our courses are all seminars rather than lecture, we have been accustomed to giving heavy reading assignments, but many students just cannot handle it anymore.Consolation: the less reading, the more they learn from me

@CitizenWald I have an assignment where they choose one book from a list and have to write an essay based on the book. I use my research budget to buy them the book do they don't take an ebook from the library. I want them to have a physical experience of reading a book. This is new since COVID.

@MagdaTeter One example: I want to have my first-semester students read your book next fall: obviously, I cannot spend 4-5 out or 12-13 weeks to get through your book alone, but I can train them and get them up to speed so they can take it on by the end of the semester :)

@MagdaTeter Also a fascinating approach! We have no real research budget, but I totally agree they need to encounter physical books. This is a multiple problem:a) it is a myth they are digital natives (they are not sophisticated critics of digital sources, though that is another matter), and they tend to read a lot of digital texts passively, don't take notes or do markup (unless one requires social commentary software)b) Although I totally understand financial constraints 1/n

@MagdaTeter They tend to see books as sort of an add-on rather than essential. When I was a student, I bought all the books (obviously, there were fewer options, but I looked for used copies when possible).Students need to see books in the same way they see the materials for which they are charged lab fees or art fees: essential tools of the trade. They also need to see owning books (in whatever form) as the trait of an educated person. In fact, I point them to statements by figures as2/n

@MagdaTeter diverse as Johnny Cash, David Bowie, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar on the importance of reading and a personal library. But unfortunately, although they denounce capitalism in the abstract and big corporations in particular, rather than going to the alumnus-owned local independent bookstore where I have ordered the books, most will go online and buy from Amazon, or, still worse, get illegal pdfs that deprive both publisher and author of legitimate income. It is very frustrating.3/n

@CitizenWald that could be a good final assignment to have them read the book and write an essay about it it in light of the class readings.
