       Figured I should do an #introduction :I'm a Pharmacy assistant and own a #pharmacy together with my parents. I mainly run the business side of things and make sure things all things IT go smoothly as well. In my spare time I help contribute to open source projects (just data, not programming) like #Openstreetmap #Wikidata #Commons etc...I also do a bit of #beekeeping ,have two beehives sitting in my backyard which hopefully will survive this winter 🤞

       #beekeeper  #beekeeping Also here's a pic of my two beehives with a thermal camera. The hive on the left is a regular wooden hive. The one on the right is a styrofoam hive.I'm not a fan of using unrecyclable tings like styrofoam, but for the bees it's much better because they lose less heat -> need to consume less of their stored food -> need to move less trough the hive (they move upwards as they eat trough their food) -> higher chance of survival

       @thibaultmol A friend of mine sells isopods and is always apprehensive when they send out winter orders because the risk that they won't arrive safely is so big.. styrofoam shipping boxes are a minimum for them and it's amazing how much it helps with thermal regulationCool to see it can help here too with beekeeping! Is this styrofoam here like sold for the purpose of being a hive? Can it stack supers + hold frames? Prob not ideal for summer tho due to the effectiveness of thermals..

       @alexis (guess I'll re-type my post, cause the app I was using for a sec there bugged out)So yeah, the styro boxes act like normal boxes, just slightly different design and thicker still. Older beekeepers tend to prefer them as well, cause they're much lighter than wooden boxes

       @alexis During summer in theory it would be hotter, but I would just look at the entrance to see if they're 'bearding up' in the evening, which would signal it's too warm and they're trying to cool down. In that case I would slide open the bottom panel to give them some extra airflow. But my hives are underneath a tree, so they automatically get a bit of shade.
