You know that if they felt that they could get away with it, today's GOP would take away womens' right to vote in a heartbeat, and restore slavery in two heartbeats.

@lauren next step — only white property owning republican men with a net worth in excess of $50m can vote. Just to make sure the “rabble” don’t destroy society or something.

@lauren It is constitutional to order slavery as a criminal punishment in the US. Don't be surprised when some state makes an effort to use that.Even after a civil war, the US couldn't quite completely say 'no' to slavery.

@lauren @squeevening Nope. They’d try and do it in one heartbeat — or as soon as one is detected.

@lauren That sense of barely-contained viciousness is what scares me about Trump and most Republicans now.

@lauren I think you have it backwards, Restore Slavery first, then Women's Rights go away with their new slavery status.

@swordplay @lauren it’s not some hypothetical thing that could happen. Some states have been doing that since the passage of the 13th Amendment.

@cohomologyisFUN @swordplay It's arguable if prison work is slavery per se. In any case, that's a much narrower situation.

@lauren @swordplay if it’s paid and voluntary, then it’s not (although probably still exploitative). But there are some cases of prisoners being forced to work without pay. There were more in the past. And absolutely we’re in a vastly better situation than pre-13th amendment. (Limited to prisoners and not chattel slavery.) No argument there!

@lauren If the GOP legislated away women's rights they would have to hear women scream about it, whereas from their perspective trans people die silently
