#Element: "Yes, we fund #Matrix dev by selling encrypted messaging to governments, which includes police: if you don’t like that then please feel free to use a different app."https://mastodon.matrix.org/@element/110340953550548309

@CKsTechNews So the end-to-end encryption in matrix (or just the element client?) has no back doors, just, uh, a way to send encrypted mesages to, uh ... third parties ... as a funding model?I will very happily stick with #XMPP and #OMEMO thanks!

@vagrantc @CKsTechNews I *think* they mean that they sell a service of encrypted messaging that the police and other governments can use to talk to each other, rather than selling them other people's encrypted messages. But I had to read it a few times too.And yeah, no reasons to deal with matrix when #XMPP exists.

@valhalla @vagrantc @CKsTechNews I really don't understand the controversy. They sell a messag*ing* *platform*, not (encrypted) messag*es*.French gov has been a major funder of Matrix for years ... but now that has become a problem?Like it or not, but the police is part of the government.*IF* they would actually send the encrypted message to the police and that wasn't utterly useless to them ... then that would be a problem as that means the encryption IS broken. But that's not the case.

@valhalla @vagrantc @CKsTechNews I don't use their software as my experience with their software has been pretty bad so far (bloated and encrypted msgs stayed encrypted ... even for me).But that's an entirely different discussion then what seems to go around now.
