bring that beat back:"While the disinformation campaign waged by the police has helped drive a lot of anti-Portland sentiment nationally, it's been downtown business interests (led by Portland Business Alliance lobbyists) who have been pushing this message locally, waging a non-stop crusade to amplify random acts of graffiti and window-breaking and portray it as full blown crisis."https://www.portlandmercury.com/opinion/2021/02/01/31563670/crying-wolf-if-portland-tourism-dies-you-can-thank-downtown-business-interests-and-the-policea

@gretared i think it's multifaceted... i think the cops want to be able to get back to beating and killing the general population w/out having to answer to anyone... as was the case here until about 20 years ago when ppl started being like... why are our cops so trigger happy? especially when there's brown ppl in the vicinity....

@gretared the reality of the situation is the most of the "business" left downtown in the the 50's and sixties when everyone left the city for the suburbs... when everyone who used to live in portland moved to beaverton those businesses followed their customers. that's why they didn't want light rail in the suburbs. cause they didn't need to get downtown b/c everywhere they used to shop was in a strip mall down the road now.

@gretared if you empty the downtown core... that land starts to sell for pennies on the dollar. and my guess is that there's a lot of folks with property that falling dramatically in value and they'll be seeking bailouts etc. the public will be a lot more willing to give up tax payer $$$ if they think the business were run out of town b/c antifa and a bunch of liberals made it "impossible for them to do business in the downtown core"
