If the metric known as “IQ” had real utility, wouldn’t we be able to ask and answer questions like “What minimum IQ is necessary for an individual to do _______?”

@GMOdysseys Conversations in themselves can perform as IQ tests. It's been studied many times that higher IQ individuals can have a harder time communicating with lower IQ individuals and it is recommended to refrain from in depth conversation with individuals who could be more than 15+ IQ points off of yourself. As someone who scored over a 130 on IQ tests 3 times whether that means anything or not, conversing with some people can be impossible as with logic outside of binary thought

@DF15 @ned I heard that an IQ of 145+ is required to be able to be able to ask the question of whether or not IQ is an overly-simplistic metric and whether or not it actually supports a model that can make predictions about individuals or populations.

@GMOdysseys @Iamthebammbamm MacNamara’s morons. They tried reeducating the dumb. It didn’t work. Below a certain IQ, people are a danger to themselves and others.Competency tests (that are low key IQ tests) are widely used in recruiting in civilian and military roles. They have been for a long time. And yes, there are scores they set for who can or can not be expected to perform in a role. (they’ve also been used in the inverse to exclude people who’s core too high as their judged to get bored or insubordinate)Maybe google ASVAB and it’s equivalents.

@GMOdysseys @Iamthebammbamm @SaintGuinefort @GMOdysseys @Iamthebammbamm It's not just the army. Tests show that under 85 IQ, it's impossible to train people for multi-step tasks. Sometimes jobs like stuffing 2 different envelope types is too complicated for them.Basically the cognitive ability rapidly declines from 90 down to about 85.

@GMOdysseys @Iamthebammbamm @GMOdysseys @Iamthebammbamm @SaintGuinefort That question is what got Charles Murray in trouble when writing The Bell Curve. To summarize a ton of research: sometimes. It depends on when you're measuring it, and what beneficial effects have already been applied. You have higher IQ when you're young, it falls over the decades with age, but you can boost it with education or IQ-specific training. The problem is there's limits to the boosts, and they have diminishing returns; you can't just keep piling on education for infinite gains. If you have trouble learning in the first place (sub 90) you won't get as big a benefit. If you pile a lot of it onto an average kid (starting at 100), you can get him to above average, but not true genius. Before the Bell Curve, progressive theory was that if we just got everyone educated and raised their standards of living, it would smooth out the racial and wealth IQ differences to a rough mean. The controversy was when Murray showed that even when accounting for education and wealth constant, the racial disparities were almost unchanged. Also, the education boosting effect was already present in the data by 1990s, meaning there wasn't likely to be a lot of improvement from more education in the future.Of course there's always quirks in individual cases--a kid who's terrible at math can get a big IQ boost by highly focused math tutoring, for example. That's a reflection of how IQ is an aggregate measurement of specific types of intellectual potential. Bell Curve-type population studies don't really address those, you'd need to go to developmental psychologists for better answers.

@GMOdysseys @PunishedD @Iamthebammbamm Really depends on what you mean. Within very limited success you can marginally increase your score on tests used to measure cognitive ability. Additionally factors like sleep could certainly effect how you perform on IQ testsHowever, the thing that they’re measuring seems to largely innate and resistant change according to external stimuli. Various exercises have been tried, but they don’t really shift the needle. Ultimately your cognitive ability is determined by hereditary factors.Much like height, you likely have a natural limit and external intervention only seems to retarded that. The best we can he help people teach their natural potential

@PunishedD @GMOdysseys @Iamthebammbamm One area that covertly receives attention is early childhood interventions. Mothers, in our modern context, are understandably anxious that if they don’t begin the right habits and education early enough that they’re kid will be a failure. Many researchers have gone out of their way to prove that most of the things you do to a child before ten don’t really affects their lifelong outcomes. Obviously they need basic education to function in society, and trauma will ruin them for life. But, at the end of the day the heritage of a child and the social caste of the people who raise them are what matter most (in terms of achievement). And in terms of cognitive testing, heritage predicts upwards of 80% of an individual’s ability. Same as height, preferred smells, allergies, and political orientation
