Have you gone down the Graham Hancock rabbit hole yet? Not “aliens” but it is more likely ancient civilizations were much more advanced than current science admits to (because MUH PAPER). For example, Google has created carbon/emission neutral data centers - they are the most efficient data centers in the world using many advanced technologies to keep ideal environments for the servers. Goolge does not share "how" it accomplishes this as it provides them with an economic advantage. Their data centers are some of the most efficient in the world. If you were open source this technology, it would no longer be an incentive for google to continue innovating and dumping BILLIONS of dollars into the endeavor. So, they would start investing elsewhere.If we really wanted to "fix" the climate problem, we structure the economy in a way which makes the largest companies in the world pour billions of dollars into solving the problem. Imagine if you told the oil companies they could build as many pipelines as they want and will have their tax burden reduced by 50% as long as no carbon dioxide was put into the atmosphere. (NOT A REAL EXAMPLE BUT JUST TO ILLUSTRATE A POINT). How long do you think it would take Exon to fix its emissions? The problem with (at least my take on it) with the "fight" for climate change is that it can be solved extremely quickly. Just tell Amazon it can do whatever it wants as long as no CO2 is produced...

But they built cool data centers! I was using google as an example because I know they have dumped a shit ton of money into data centers and made some pretty bomb ass innovations. My point was if policy would incentivize giant corporations to go green, it would happen at a rate that would make your head spin. Gov policy is slow and clunky. Look at Meta - Zuck just decided to dump 20 billion into "meta verse". Imagine what would happen if you gave them a real reason to go green. I'm not pitching solutions here because idk dick about the climate change issues, but just arguing for creating incentives instead of just complaining about it and tying yourself to a train and crying about the whales.

@Tony @jeffcliff @ai @gav @Cult_archaeo Circle K is not a rebrand it is a completely different company. Almost none of the store parts of gas stations are owned buy the gas companies. The stores pay to be the chip and soda portion of the operation and handle the gas transactions for BP, shell etc

I sometimes think about how much of our own technological development trajectory was inevitable and how much was historical accident. Our technology today is centered around computing, because making microchips turned out to be possible. Could we have instead become a civilization of rocket engineers or sound engineers or w/e? Or do all roads lead to computing in the end?

@Tony @gav @Cult_archaeo @TalmudTranslator @jeffcliff I always thought cap and trade for emissions sounded like a logical idea. Seems easier to match the financial incentives to the atmosphere's "response curve" with that than with a CO2 tax. But I'm no expert either.

I don’t like the cap and trade idea because having a set amount of “credits” likely leads to lobbying and political incentives to push policies for the companies who have the most money to spend on the credits. I don’t like the idea of “fixed” amount of credits because it seems to me the likely outcome would be the company with the most money simply buying all the credits and either reselling them or just hoarding them. I generally disagree with any system which lends itself to abuse and cohersion with money. Which, unfortunately, is most of our systems in the west 😅.

Actually, I believe our system is centered on electricity and combustion. I’ve heard some dudes talking about how ancient civilizations used steam power as well as sound waves to create an Industrial Revolution. Whether or not it’s true, idk, but interesting to consider.
