🗣️ Our CPO, Patrick Alberts, has been busy at the European Police Congress.Taking part in the P20 panel & presenting a prototype live demo, he's been in his Element showcasing how Element helps leverage Matrix for secure, interoperable messaging across Germany's police forces 🔒

@element you must be getting an awful lot of requests for 'back-doors' at a place like that.

@element Enabling European policing is enabling racial profiling, enabling the targeting of activists (your main user base) and enabling an institution that has historically been and continues to be aligned with the far right.

@element nice to know that matrix is an untrustworthy, compromised platform.

@element Unpopular opinion: Thats the best thing you could've done. Govs all around the world pay good money for tech solutions so they *will* find someone to sell it to them. If element refused to do it, Meta would. And we all know whats the better option out of the two

@element So what I'm getting from this is I need to stop using Element with my ESL students immediately, because the entirety of the police forces in my entire country are one mediocre excuse or bad election away from kidnapping and/or shooting any nonwhite immigrant regardless of immigration status, and you're eager to help spy on potential police violence victims. Is that accurate?

@luna I mean for all intents and purposes they're the same, including/especially the people. Matrix.org/Element are also financially unstable as evidenced by their 2022 report:https://matrix.org/blog/2022/12/25/the-matrix-holiday-update-2022they also fired their entire trust and safety/community team this year, one of whom is known to me personallythis is on top of the fact that the software just plain sucks. #matrix

@luna First and maybe most importantly both Element and Matrix.org are based and legally registered in the UK. Which means they'll be subject to the UK Online Safety bill if it becomes law. A bill that would require backdoors in encryption or more likely client-side scanning. (scroll down to the 'Excuse Me?' heading https://www.theverge.com/23708180/united-kingdom-online-safety-bill-explainer-legal-pornography-age-checks; https://signal.org/blog/uk-online-safety-bill/)In addition to and because of the fact that Matrix stores everything forever, Matrix uses a ton of resources. Even the "svelte/high performance 2nd gen" server kinda sucks. cf. https://matrix-org.github.io/dendrite/installation/planning#requirementsespecially compared to an XMPP server serving 5k+ active accounts and barely using 1.8gb of RAM.Finally it's just a bad protocol and design. in addition to the privacy issues identified by @disroot (https://disroot.org/en/blog/matrix-closure) and its GDPR issues (https://github.com/libremonde-org/paper-research-privacy-matrix.org/blob/master/part2/README.md). The only "effective" implementation of Matrix is stuff made by Element itself. Want encryption? Or X, Y, Z, well for 99% of users the only option is Element (cf. https://seirdy.one/posts/2021/02/23/keeping-platforms-open/#case-study-matrix-and-element). When i tried a while back to seriously use it, the desktop clients I found were either early beta and unstable, didn't support encryption, or electron apps. Finally, what percentage of Matrix users are on Matrix.org? IDK but when I used a local hackerspace's homeserver probably 80% of the people in the hackerspace were still on matrix.org.
