got a bluesky invite and i'm checking it out. i'll post very personal first reactions here if/as i use it. if you aren't interested in this, mute the thread.pre-musk twitter was a lifechanging experience for me. i found community on there, and i've really grown to care for those people. i met a partner and my current girlfriend through that site, i'm getting ffs because of that site, and it helped me make sense of a lot of things about myself and a lot of traumatic experiences i've had. my understanding of politics and myself evolved in a way that i think has made me a better person. often i hated the site, but what it meant to me was undeniable. let me indicate why i am coming in with low expectations for bluesky, not for the app as it currently is which I expect to be fine but for its future state.1) it will be subject to the same hyperfocused capitalist pressures twitter was, and at least presents itself as a continuation of twitter, so i expect it to have all the problems of pre-musk twitter.it has ambitions to be decentralized but from what tech people are saying here the decentralization plans seem not super well thought out. further, the current userbase probably does not care about decentralization at all and might react negatively to it being introduced.#bluesky #twitter #mastodon

       2) comments from the admin strongly suggest they haven't thought deeply about content moderation. i get the vague sense that it's supposed to work like mastodon at some point down the line. this may just be because my instance admins are very good, but moderation seems to work extremely well on mastodon, and I have to imagine this would be impossible without stages of gradual community growth. bluesky does not have incentives to grow gradually. what i expect to happen is that i'll log on, the feed will look great, and at some point down the line it will go from invite only to open and then it's going to immediately get obliterated by nazis.obviously these are preconceptions. who knows how it'll go? i'll try to keep an open mind.#bluesky #twitter #mastodon

here's the infamous content moderation panel in the settings, with its default toggles. the first thing I notice is that this is intended to suggest bluesky essentially doesn't remove anything, although of course they will, at least if they don't want to get shut down for spreading CSA. the presence of the impersonation toggle in particular is a strong signal. nobody at any point on the political spectrum is going to set that to 'show,' so accounts tagged as impersonation are effectively banned, but they want to make absolutely clear that even in that case in principle you could go look at them. in short, the company is telling me that it at least has libertarian aesthetics.#bluesky #twitter #mastodon

bizarre circumstance: a student just came into my office hours who has connections to both bluesky and mastodon development, saw me posting this thread, and we ended up having a detailed discussion about the bluesky moderation plans. they strike me as worse than I at first thought, actually, essentially a libertarianization of mastodon's system. the idea is that independent companies will do content moderation and then you pay them to use their filters and content removals. I can't even convey how much I hate this. the problem with nazi propaganda isn't just that people who really don't want to see it, see it. the biggest problem is that your neighbors see it.#bluesky #twitter #mastodon

@sc_griffith I imagine the quick growth of open source blocking filters that bluesky will block because they can't monetize it.It would additionally be blocked because the teams managing open source moderation would be seen to have too much control over bluesky users. This also directly means that I'd pay to use the site and ALSO pay to make the site useful.

@RileyNorman @sc_griffith isn't the whole point of the design to have pluggable moderation?I don't understand where the idea that they would block popular open source moderation algorithms comes from.

first impression of the default timeline is that almost exactly the people i would want to see on twitter are on here. not many academics, but there are lots of queer leftist shitposters. that said I think it's pretty clear that a lot of people on here have no idea what the above content moderation "plans" are.#bluesky #twitter #mastodon

@WomanCorn @sc_griffithIt's not a "plugin", it's a service. They can try to make it sound technicool all they want. It still requires that they provide processing and storage for its ongoing functioning, not just a bit of codeNo corporation anywhere grants free processing and storage for another organizations services without a business reason. Is Bluesky going to buy loads of servers to manage other organization's resources? The business answer is that no, they will not.

@RileyNorman @sc_griffith Oh, will they be hosting the processing? I hadn't heard that.My understanding was that there was going to be a standard feed format and that algorithms would just produce that, but run on their own infrastructure.

@WomanCorn @sc_griffithIt's large amounts of data processing and at those potential scales it adds up fast and again, as of yet I see no decentralization.I'll be honest, I think the biggest problem is that it was promoted to take advantage of Twitter's problems too early in its lifecycle. Now there are a bunch of claims without anything to really back them up and from code that is, as far as I can tell, controlled by a private company at this time. They could have funded a non-profit but...

@WomanCorn @sc_griffith It's not that I don't think they can deliver, it's that I wouldn't trust the claims of a for-profit that isn't actually fulfilling those claims anywhere and it doesn't help that they appear to be hunting users instead of a product which leads me to believe that users are the product.I'll have to admit that I'm a bit pessimistic with tech anymore.

@RileyNorman @sc_griffith they're a Public Benefit LLC. Those are pretty new, I'm not sure if they work well or not.Of course, corruption in traditional nonprofits is common enough.

@WomanCorn @sc_griffith I saw that and took a glance. It's supposed to help CEOs take public benefit into consideration over investors. I'm no expert but It's still a for profit organization. Honestly, I saw that and thought "Oh, a money making venture made to look like a relative to not-for-profit organizations." Game theory informs me that financial considerations will still take precedent until it is profitable and it's the tech world, that may be never.

@RileyNorman @sc_griffith Maybe in a decade there will have been enough of them that we can clearly say <this doesn't work> or <this is what you need to do to succeed>.

@WomanCorn @RileyNorman I think regardless of the corporate structure, it's pretty clear that the people driving this company are libertarians and I expect that to take priority

@sc_griffith @RileyNorman For Bluesky, probably. But it will be interesting to see if PBLLCs in general can stay on mission better than ordinary companies. Or even nonprofits.
