Microfiche -- no one's favorite reading experience.( how to lose friends, simply say: "want to talk about microfiche scanning?" )Anyway, @internetarchive is working hard on getting another generation of uFiche scanning tech working. Slow, but moving.Sorry about bringing it up, please don't mute me, I promise I will not flood the zone with uFiche news.

@brewsterkahle @internetarchive I personally would love to hear about microfiche scanning. Is there a thermal distortion issue? You've piqued my curiosity.

@brewsterkahle honestly it seems appropriate to microblog about microfiche!

@brewsterkahle @internetarchive thats awesome! We dont want the microfiche to go to waste due to noone wanting to use them anymore.

@enkiv2 @internetarchive we have not run into that issue. We have imaging, deduping, acquisition/shipping/donor management, handling, metadata setting (a very big issue because most of what we have are govdocs), separating the pages on the fiche cards, cropping, deskew, page numbers, ocr, pdf generation, rights issues, printdisabled services, lending, preservation.then datamining, visualization, AI research, answering all the fan mail from patrons, and other fun things.

@brewsterkahle @internetarchive why would I want to mute you for this? I'd actually love to do an interview/chat with you on this (and other archival scanning techniques)

@brewsterkahle @internetarchive Oh god that sour smell and that particular kind of opaque sick-headache that went with using the reader. Thank you.Not wanting to wish that on anyone else, hope the plan includes safety protections and short work shifts for whoever does the scanning.

@brewsterkahle @internetarchive When I was at University, killing some time between classes at the library, I discovered a dusty old microfiche reader. Just for kicks I pulled a random box out of a file-cabinet and figured-out how to put the reel in. It was a newspaper from the 1920s and reading it was a lot of fun. Every day I read old newspapers on that thing... It was a favorite reading experience of mine.

@brewsterkahle @internetarchive I was a big fan of the post on the internet archive blog that went deep into the complications of book scanning; I'd love to see a similar post on microfiche & microfilm

I think microfilm/microfiche was held by the dreamers, of the mid 20th C, to democratizate access to information-- (sound familiar?)But that dream for microforms was crushed by publishers, if I read Binkley correctly. And the technology languished, under developed, ugly, in corners of libraries as a cheap small copies. We have another shot at reliable access to knowledge, building on those early dreamers of microforms and the Internet. onward!

@brewsterkahle @glennf The only big #microfilm story I know is how Bill Blackbeard saw libraries pulping their print newspaper collections (to replace them with microfiche) and personally went in and saved the color #comics pages which otherwise would have been entirely lostAlways took that as a cautionary. Maybe don’t destroy the originals unless you’re sure the backup is sound

@brewsterkahle Microfilm gets a bad rap but it is way easier to digitize than the original whatever would have been.
