I really want #Mastodon and the #Fediverse to succeed, and offer a viable alternative to a wide range of disappointed #Twitter users, I really doBut the toxicity of this clique, and the effect is has on how Mastodon is built and run, is probably the largest risk for its survival

I’m pretty convinced that #Twitter will die. Slowly, for sure, but the platform is trending toward irrelevance.Something else will "replace" Twitter. And I’m really not sure this something else will be #Mastodon.If new users are welcomed by a threatening firing squad who lecture them on how they should use Mastodon, new users won’t stay. And for a good reason.

There’s something incredibly incoherent to root for an alternative to #Twitter, but then to make it extremely hard for said alternative to succeed when there’s a once in a lifetime window that opens#Mastodon will not have another chance. Once network externalities will start to kick-in in the Twitter alternative, it’ll be over for ten years. And if said Twitter alternative is #BlueSky, it’ll likely be over for Mastodon.

@rolle Sadly, most people won’t run their own servers. If the experience of the modal user is bad, the total number of users Mastodon will be able to attract will stay very low.

On the contrary: the thing with an open network like the fediverse is that it can outlive any twitter alternative, in principle. It's already survived over 10 years, it'll survive another.

@tommi @osc I was on two servers before my own and didn't encounter these issues. While saying this, I don't invalidate yours.But the thing is, the total number of users is not very low. 11+ million users is more than enough for me and my tiny server federates with 88% of the Fediverse.
