YouTube on smartTV now serves 2 ads at the start of the video from 65 sec each if you don't skip. @stux even with pihole it won't work. The YouTube App can by pass all of this, you can't use piHole or adblock anymore.You have to get another App that is hacked in a way to disable ad or act like a YouTube Premium subscription has been made.

@stux #PiHole doesn't help (I think)... Think they serve ads from same addresses as videos, so can't easily block.Gave up a year ago and I just started paying for it.... šHave got a few of my favourite channels being scrapped by a #PeerTube instance I got though... š

@stux@mstdn.social No, PiHole can't block the ads on YouTube because they are served from the same domain and all, so that would block ALL traffic and that is not what you want, because then you got rid of the ad.. but also your video haha

@stux@mstdn.social Yea, hahaha none the less, PiHole is a must have for me, but yea I use uBlock for the ads on Desktop and on my phone.. I just dont care enough, since its usually to fall asleep and usually tht happens during the ads xD

@stux pihole doesn't help much either against pre-, mid- and post-rolls .. as they are part of the YT infrastructure .. only thing that helps are a premium subscription .. sadly.I pay $11/month to get rid of ads.

@stux I stopped watching YouTube on devices and apps I cannot arm in #ADGuard plug-in. This means I only use browser and havenāt seen an ad for a long time.I would pay for premium - that removes ads, but wonāt unless they remove the tracking within the subscription.

@stux The "smart" features of televisions are designed to do one thing: shovel more ads in your face. I turn that stuff off and install S-Tube on my android tv box. Skips all the ads, constantly updated to stay ahead of Google.

@stux They don't want to deliver you the ads. They want to sell their own (quite overprized in my opinion) product to you. Videos without ads.The best way to reach this goal is to increase the disturbance by ads as much as possible.

@stux even with pi hole it is basically impossible to block ads on a Smart TV. With enough patience and fine-tuning you can do a fairly decent job in your browser until YouTube catches up or if the ad plays on the same domain

@stux well, the costs of that infra is not cheap either. I happily (and can afford to) pay ā¬ 18 euro to remove ads for my whole family and have a music streaming service for everyone. But what it doesn't remove is the content creator sponsorships. These annoy me...

@stux I feel this so much. Sometimes, when I am feeling feisty, I will exit the video and restart it over and over and over until there are no more ads. I do not believe this accomplishes anything, but it makes me feel better.

@stux not to mention that they mess with the volumes of these ads - Loud! Way louder then the regular content - which is prohibited for regular television commercials. Though thatās probably the advertisers, not google itself.

@stux shitty ads and expensive Spotify made me buy YT Premium (includes Music) ā costs 2$/m with a student discount, and I never looked back. Well, ok, there are some issues with the Music, but I don't care anymore:- No desktop client, install web-app through Chrome- The web-app still doesn't support any lyrics- They only recently added synced lyrics in the Android app- AFAIK there's no API, so it's impossible to connect with Musixmatch to create synchronized lyrics

@stux There are what I feel as āpunishment adsā. My theory is that if I skip too many, I get a much longer unskippable one. I think you get a set minimum amount of time per hour (or something) and your quota gets filled with ads based on your behaviour.I tend to use Linux for YouTube. Ads donāt show up for some reason.
