Calling a shooter “crazy” or “mentally ill” is what fascists do, because while they have no intention of stopping White Supremacists from organizing violence, they do plan on putting the “mentally ill” into prisons. This includes anyone who is autistic, transgender, gay, lesbian, bisexual, depressed, or just plain weird. So when liberals talk about “mental illness” in regards to mass shootings, they’re just doing fascism.

@psychictides If you look closer at several of the shooters it's really clear that they were in fact mentally ill, you shouldn't make good sounding generalizations that ignore the specifics of the individual incidents.

@Arcana @psychictides It’s not the notion, I’m going off of mass shootings stats and papers where the common factor always led to mental illness. It isn’t “lets assume this person is mentally ill” it was established these people often had a history of mental illness, hence people blaming SSRIs instead of the root of the problemAnyways, let’s not act like mental illness is a positive quality to have. There’s a reason it had negative connotations, and rightfully so. When are mentally ill people thrown in the bin? Oh that’s right. When they pose a danger to themselves or others.

@Arcana @psychictides oh I think that's definitely part of it, because this phenomenon is very particular to certain regions in the west, and mass shootings/masscares need to meet a specific definition which is disputed among researchers. Cartel killings are much more brutal and send a message but with mass shooters it feels like they want to kill a bunch of civilians representing themselves. They also tend to have a narcissistic component with their manifestos or need for national attention.

@rees @Arcana @psychictides Yes internet access is part of it but these days everyone claims to have body or gender dysmorphia or mental illness. Mental illness is attributed to poverty or environment the majority of the time. These days poor self esteem is pathologized.

@rees @Arcana @psychictides it's normal for kids to have poor self esteem esp into their teens but big pharma benefits from pushing pills and creating a dependence on SSRIs early on among other things.... and yeah anti-depressants were proven a fad not long ago so who is the APA really helping here?
