Pattern in website design I do not understand at all: making sign-up buttons/screens large and visible, but hiding login functionality behind dark-pattern non-button text links or as a second click off of the sign-up screen. It's not just that it's terrible UX; it's that I can't even imagine what it even accomplishes.

@phooky I suspect (especially for banks) the authentication stuff is very separate from the main front website, so I think at least that's why the login is separate from the main stuff.

@penguin42 @phooky Have worked at multiple banks. The marketing site, signup, and log in are all different things (usually), but that's not related to which path gets prioritized. The real answer is very boring: making sign up prominent increases conversion more than making sign in hidden decreases attrition, so everyone does it that way. But how many of those new signups are people who can't access existing accounts? And how many idle accounts are ones that can't be logged into? That stuff's not in the OKRs or on the dashboard.
