I've summarized my current view on #Mastodon as part of the #Fediverse and the issue of instance diversity in a blog article:"... the evolution of Mastodon into a community-led foundation presents an opportunity to uphold the core principles of the Fediverse and instance diversity ..."https://write.as/louis77/saving-mastodon-why-it-needs-to-transform-into-a-foundation-run-by-the

@louis "This is wishful thinking from the CEO of Mastodon, who always peddles that Mastodon is “not for sale” because it is a non-profit company. The only “non-profit” thing about it is that the company does not have to pay taxes according to German law. Nevertheless, it is privately owned by a single person (as of today)"Thank you for this important pointWhich almost everyone engaged in this conversation skates right on by -- if they're even aware of these little details

@louis I regard decentralisation as crucial to any peer-to-peer communication (thus also email and USENET rather than Facebook and Discord). Clearly I got a bit lucky when I found this place!

@louis Hmmm, something to think about indeed. I'm no expert, but isn't the concept of decentralisation and its diverse protocols and communities, the important thing about the #fediverse 🤔 A single 'service provider', for want of a better term, such as #mastodon going full on 'corporate evil', shouldn't really matter. Communities can always do a #twitter and find, or build an alternative.https://calckey.social/notes/9el194g4pm

@louis Excellent blog article and I fully agree that a foundation would be an excellent move for Mastodon. That said, that relies on someone being willing to let their child grow up and leave the house, so to speak. I expect if a Founder didn't invision that from the gitgo, it's probably a very difficult decision to move to later, when things are going well.

@christo Thank you. From what I hear (on the Mastodon Discord) they work in better Governance but someone wants to keep governing. I still believe that Mastodon (as in the wider ecosystem) is a platform with a lot of unlocked potential as long as it is not run by a community-led organization. We will see how it turns if. If we have still users left on Mastodon until then.
