Regardless of capabilities and licensing etc. I find the shift from engineering to magic that comes with the belief in LLMs deeply troubling. Our infrastructures are badly maintained as is, this won't improve the situation.

@esther I have to admit that I have never read or played anything from that universe so I'll have to rely on your judgement there

@tante in that setting the Terran empire’s tech is extremely advanced and poorly understood as it’s all from before a dark age and nothing new is developed. There’s a cult of priests who both maintain things physically but also worship the ghosts of the machines, which may or may not actually exist, possibly referring to AIs inhabiting the more complex devices.

@tante Magic is more aligned with how managers tend to think. They are much more comfortable with it.

@tante For an LLM wouldn't be a problem to learn COBOL… but would it be able to maintain and debug programs written 50 years ago?https://edition.cnn.com/2020/04/08/business/coronavirus-cobol-programmers-new-jersey-trnd/index.html

@tante As @tomalak said, magical thinking is endemic among managers. I think an actual understanding of the technology is a challenge for engineers, as well. Compounding all of this is the chatter about “emergent abilities”, for which the evidence is ambiguous — the engineers lack all conviction, the venture capitalists are full of passionate intensity
