When I'm trying to explain what gender affirming care is to people who think it's something new I think of that joke about two goldfish in a bowl and one says "The water's nice" and the other replies "What's water?"Cis people don't tend to notice it because they've had it their whole lives.

Another good illustration of the double standard around gender affirming care has to do with a drug called Risperidone. It's an antipsychotic medication and after it was approved for use in adolescents it was discovered that a common side effect was gynecomastia in adolescent males. No one thought twice about offering those boys reductions.Now compare it to top surgery for trans men. It's the same procedure.

And transphobes will often try to bash top surgery for trans men by describing it as "removing healthy breast tissue" or "mutilation" but when you ask then why removing it for boys who got gynecomastia from Risperidone is any different the reasons they list are the exact same ones trans men cite. No one thinks twice about the "healthy breast tissue" of the boys on Risperidone.Why? Because it's gender affirming care.

Gender dysphoria is not. It’s more accurate to compare it to BIID (body integrity identity disоrdеr, also called apotemnophilia or xenomelia) where people believe they’re not meant to see (because they identify as blind), or have limbs or desire paralysis. In the quest to find relief, some are willing to blind or mutilate themselves. Some are successful in finding unscrupulous surgeons willing to perform elective amputations.Does this sound familiar at all to you? Can minors who truly believe they’re meant to live in a wheelchair, give consent & petition for the transection of their spinal cord? Is it ethical to advocate in favor of mentally disordered patients (especially pediatric ones) to hurt themselves because they believe this will alleviate their distress? Indulging their delusions is compassion?How can you advocate in favor of "gender-affirming care" (nice euphemism eh?) that feeds mentally ill people to the Big Pharma profit machine which exploits & convinces them they'll need lifelong revision/cosmetic surgeries & medications if they want to be happy?This ideology is monstrous, demented...evil.
