@nano Adding on to this, I think social media should be restricted from anyone under 18. As useful as it can be, apps like Twitter and Instagram only seem to cause more harm than good for teenagers. Multiple studies have been done that show a decline in mental health for kids who are terminally online. Again, I know it can be an escape for people living in a shitty situation, but the negatives always seem to out way the positives. That's just my opinion though.

@reallyguyreally @nano But for many others, especially queer youths, it is their only escape from abusive parents. Even within accepting households, finding community is critical for queer teenagers' survival and well-being, and seeking that community in person can often expose them to targeted violence. Ageist opinions about "people under 18 being too young to use social media" further alienate kids who are already socially ostracized offline. I know, because I was one of them. Also, what are today's kids supposed to DO—they can't go outside, they "shouldn't be on the Internet", they can't hang out in malls, etc. Are they just supposed to spend 18 years of their life doing nothing but school, waiting until they graduate and are finally allowed to be people??! That's a miserable life. Perhaps we should be working on creating healthier communities for people of all ages, not trying to shut down literally everything children do to try and escape the horrors that adults have imposed on them.
