Peer review for @dsalo's Innkeeper at the Roach Motel was "She can't say that, can she?," at the same time that she named names in a published LIS chapter. #LPForum23

LIS literature and Library Publishing Coalition is the public face of library publishing, so we need to put our discipline's publishing house in order. There is no outsourcing ethics in LIS. @dsalo #LPForum23

Library Learning Analytics—"Assessment by student surveillance"—is about making libraries look good at the expense of student (data) privacy. We should be ashamed of this. @dsalo #LPForum23

We now know some things about what students think about surveillance. Many students take it in stride in ways @dsalo finds horrifying. They have trouble thinking of surveillance as problematic. #LPForum23

But they say across research that they want some fences built around learning analytics. 1). Notice and transparency; 2). Revokable consent; 3.) De-identified data. @dsalo #LPForum23

Only 16 of 62 studies documented an ethics review. 31 of 46 US-based studies did not disclose whether the research passed or was exempt from IRB. @dsalo #LPForum23

Ideas: Require ethics statements from authors. Establish policy for use of patron data in publications. Check your retraction policies. Add clear data-handling questions to author guidance, editorial workflows, peer-review rubrics. Add ethics watchdogs to editorial boards. Retract the unethical stuff. @dsalo #LPForum23
