Greetings. Here are the steps governments will use to turn the Internet into a government-monitored hellscapeVietnam is now going down this route, as did China, and soon the U.S. with bipartisan plans to (ultimately) track everything you do on the Net. EU, Russia, everyone will join in. In China, violations of Network use policy can get you arrested. Politicians in both parties here are salivating over similar powers down the line. -L1) Require government ID age verification (tied to identity of course) to use "social media" ("to protect the children" from the Internet, but not guns).2) Expand this regime to any site considered by anyone to contain any content "inappropriate for children"3) Expand this regime to more sites, and ultimately to all Internet usage, probably via ISP mandates4) Any promises that these ID/age systems will not be used for other purposes (e.g. tracking of usage) will quickly erode as calls rise for detailed activity tracking for "more protection of children" and "expanding law enforcement needs".And that, my friends, will be that. -L

@lauren Have they mentioned the application and renewal fees charged to users yet? Seems unlikely for them to miss such a cash grab.

@lauren no. There have been attempts to get ball rolling on this many, many times, and internet have worked around it all the time. Internet commerce is just too important money and tax maker for lot of countries for this to happen. Will be there attempts? Sure. russia is safe bet, because regime will see walls slowly closing in. China will want get everyone to get along with program, but their internet is already like that. EU? I don't think so. Some states in USA maybe.

@peteriskrisjanis This time is totally different. There is broad bipartisan support at the state and federal levels, and most polls show most Americans are OK with such restrictions.

@lauren I really have no knowledge about this in USA. So I would agree those tendencies are worrisome. On technical level it would just make lot of stuff illegal, but not really controllable. As for Europe, attempts are there, but there are clear big pushback on this. We will see.

@peteriskrisjanis The UK in particular seems to be well along this path, and even worse.

@lauren El Fucko, sorry Scott Morrison wanted to introduce a policy before the last election that all Australians had to provide 100 points of id to open or keep their social media account to stop cyberbullying. we already have data retention and Internet censorship laws in this country.
