I knew Texas was bad but didn't think it was this bad..Why would anyone chose to live in a state where even the governor is out to murder you :amaze:

@stux It's the intersection of unbridled capitalism and unquestioned white supremacy, Texas just provides a stage to play it out.

In the past we had a girl over from the States, Texas who stayed a few night since she had a BMX tounrement here in the Netherlands and she also told us stuff like..If you ever visit the US, try to avoid Texas. Or that she would not tell her grandparents she is gay and did not believe in god cause that would mean bannishment :amaze: Example after example why we should not want to visit her home state, and you know. I believed her fully..

@stux I was just reminded of this so I'll pass it along. There are great people in Texas, just as there are awful people in states like Washington and Oregon. Let's all try to meet people before we start hating them.

@stux Texas and the US fought a war against Mexico in the 1830's because Mexico banned slavery and they wanted to keep it. Texas became part of the US about 10 years later. That's an insight into how fucked up Texas is

@stux As an American there are states that I cannot enter without risk to my safety. Texas, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, and my health, Arizona. We just take a sharpie to the map. Benefit is, there’s nothing there but sprawl and inhabitable weather. So it’s for the best. I’ll happily live all my life around the Great Lakes. :)

@stuxI live in a neighboring state that is nearly as bad and aspires to be worse. There are few reasons to live here and considerably fewer to visit. The only thing holding this part of the country back from being a total hell hole are the comparatively liberal metropolitan areas.

@stux America has lost its mind. Many of us live in fear of being shot at work or our children being shot at school. Most people do not want to live this way. Little has been done to reduce the violence. Hate mongering is profitable here.

@stuxAs someone who lives in Texas, yes -- there are parts of Texas that are that way! Thankfully the majority of the population lives in the Cities and are not like that!

@stux @Gustodon The biggest cause of crap like that in Texas and Florida is that the majority of the "good" people don't bother voting. https://www.wfaa.com/article/news/politics/inside-politics/texas-politics/low-voter-turnout-texas-midterm-elections-2022-leading-questions-texas/287-b7af7c34-563a-469b-a565-68b0bdc7dea4

@stux I was born there and moved when I was 26. As a cis white person, I don’t know if it is worse than it was. But I do know I can’t go back for the safety of my family with the current state politics and laws. That makes me sad. I know it is not all of them, but it is most of them and that is enough to make it unsafe for anyone not a white cis Christian man. I would imagine they said the same about Nazi Germany.

@stux people go where the work is and there are a lot of good paying jobs and affordable places to live in Texas. And if you hate snow and like hot weather it’s perfect for you. For 95% of the people living there, it’s not significantly different than the rest of the states on a day to day live your life basis. So the things that make it terrible just don’t affect most of the people. Meanwhile I hate it down there.

@stux I was born in Texas, and I still live here. It’s so hard to move to another state unless you’re rich. Even looking at other states, you see so many of them have been passing the same shitty anti LGBT laws and they all have mass shootings too. I’ve been wanting to move for a while, but it seems so hopeless. That mall shooting was at a place only a few minutes drive from me. I’ve been there many times. I hate how we have let it get this bad. I wish they’d take away the guns. All of them.

@stux I heard from Texans that Austin is sort of a safe haven where people can be themselves.
