People keep bringing up the very tired “Linux on the desktop” meme to dismiss the Fediverse. But a meme is just a meme. In the real world, Linux dominates. Your phone? Probably Linux. Your car’s infotainment system? Linux. Your router? Linux. Chromebook? Linux. Windows has a Linux Subsystem too. Linux has won. The “Linux on the desktop” naysayers don’t even realize it. The Fediverse should be so lucky.

@atomicpoet Maybe the issue with Linux on the desktop was because for a long time people 'including experts' kept saying year xxxx is the year of the desktop, then it didn't exactly happen.Maybe the Hype or the expectations generated from that was too much.As you point out what HAS happened is that Linux has come in to dominate the backend of things, servers, phones, cars, set top boxes etc, and Linux is just the kernel. Where as the front end can be bash, xorg, wayland, KDE, GNOME, Xfce etc.The fediverse has now matured to the point where it can be used, and is used by anyone. But we don't have the media sharing that year xxxx will be year of the fediverse, so there is nothing to accuse us of making empty predictions. We can just get on with building what we have.

Truth be told, the Linux paradigm probably will be what becomes of the Fediverse. What will happen is that most people will use the thing that gives them familiarity and comfort.Which is fine. But soon we’ll see the Fediverse begin to unlock things we didn’t think possible. Weather trackers will use it. So will video games. It will be used on millions of websites. Most people won’t know because it will simply power *everything*.

@atomicpoet One of the web based learning platforms, 'New Skills Academy' uses facebook for students to communicate with each other. I would like to be able to reach out to other students regardless of learning provider on here and see what we can create. There are a lot of websites that offer learning either free or low cost, so it should be possible to discuss anything, the advantage is if a group of say biochemistry students chat, it would attract people working in the industry, coversations then ramp up a few gears, everyone benefits.I think what may help too is for those who are here to contact providers who offer basic IT skills and ask if they teach people about the fediverse, if enough of us do that, it may push the request over the threshold where they start looking at doing it. That may solve the issue of a few instances dominating, as part of the training would include discussions of choosing an instance.

@MacropodCare @atomicpoet I am not too sure either, but the Linux kernel is scalable so it can run on anything from embedded devices right up to supercomputers. As a result you take the kernel and customise it so it just has the components needed, so a tablet has say solid state storage, so would be optimised for that you don't need the SATA support for example. So the Kernel just then acts as a layer between the hardware and the android user interface.I am probably wrong somewhere, but that is how I understand things. I would guess the Linux kernel for the Raspberry may not have SATA support built in, as there is no SATA hardware, but other single board computers may have that.

@atomicpoet So on this I think we should be specific on what to ask for initially, the fediverse is huge for a startso how about tutors need to explainWhat Free software isWhat Open Source is (as there IS a difference)Perhaps LibreOffice as one option In terms of FediExplain the Fediverse (touch on activity pub as a protocol)Use of : Help with setting up accounts, on different services.Anyone here in #Devon, #UK who is at least willing to help with this, as in just contact providers and ask about courses with the view of generating some awareness that replacements exist. #BasicSkills #FreeSoftware #Advocacy

@atomicpoet Linux on the desktop via proton runs most games better than Windows 11 now.
