It turns out you can simply serve a file from a domain to use it as your bsky handle. So this guy is now S3. All of S3.

@jonty S3 is lame. It's so easy to write a small file server. That's more in the fediverse spirit.

@jonty this is fiiiine. bluesky is filled with very smart people and therefore they don’t need to participate in open standard groups before they just invent their own!

@jesseplusplus @jonty this is why they’re doing a closed beta, to find and fix these issues.do you think Mastodon etc never had bugs, even bad ones?

@thomasfuchs @jesseplusplus @jonty Mastodon is open source and is based on open standards that much of the already existing web uses. Bluesky throws all of that out the window for a subpar experience and limited user freedom (I haven't seen their source code anywhere for their clients).Mastodon here has the backing of the full FOSS community, and then some. Bluesky doesn't.

@orowith2os @thomasfuchs @jesseplusplus @jonty I"m not sure how it's a subpar experience when it's way easier and more understandable for people to sign up for Bluesky and follow people there. Maybe we should define "user freedom" as differently than "developer freedom" since a product that you can compile, but can't sign up for, isn't actually much more "free" in the real world.

@anildash @thomasfuchs @jesseplusplus @jonty Bluesky is not compatible with as many platforms as Mastodon and the rest of the fediverse, pretty much behaving entirely like YouTube, Twitter, or Facebook. It calls itself "decentralized" when it only has one implementation and it's really centralized as hell. It's a subpar experience from the very start, when it decided to use its own protocol.

@jonty And what if someone else does the same thing from s3? I suspect it means both people can control the account?

@orowith2os @thomasfuchs @jesseplusplus @jonty The server-side code that handles this feature is open source (client code wouldn't be necessary here).https://github.com/bluesky-social/indigoAlso "much of the existing web uses" isn't much of a reason IMO.Mastodon isn't very good at migrations for example, and signed posts is seemingly broken on Mastodon right now.And then there's the quotes issue...

@lucid00 Shitting out shitty code does not 'free software' make.
