Gun violence is now the leading cause of death among children in the United States.Every developed nation has people with mental illness, video games, disgruntled ex-employees, alienated people, homicidal and suicidal persons, etc. Why does the U.S. have the problem it does? It’s the same things it always is- the number of firearms, access to them, fetishism surrounding the 2nd Amendment, and the immense political power of the firearms industry. Not a Republican has the courage to step up.

@karlmorant @TonyStark It sure seems that Republicans want to kill abortion rights so that the NRA and the Republicans can make sure you stay home, make babies and when you all go out as a family to do groceries, go to school or go to church you can become targets…….. How delightful …… WHAT KIND OF A SOCIETY THINKS LIKE THIS?????

@TonyStark So true. In particular "fetishism" around 2A and guns is coinciding with these shootings representing a chance for sad, angry men to dream they will be the one to stop a mass shooter. There is so much iconography of Rambo and hyper-masculinity that almost relishes the chance to do battle in our streets (typically against another race). American masculinity has become so toxic, to some degree it wants to lock horns with disaster just to prove something. It's sad and infuriating.

@TonyStark And now we have the new problem of guns in the hands of old coots paranoid that they are about to become victims of crime, just because a stranger shows up on the porch. They got that from watching Fox News...

@TonyStark "Not a Republican has the courage to step up." I think the GOP sees political advantage in the stance they take. I really don't know why. Playing to their base, maybe, which is much more limited than they think. And I also think that pro gun stance puts the lie to their "pro life" position regarding abortion.I also think that much of the blame needs to be sheeted home to the Murdoch media. Fox news has much to answer for.I attended a school gathering a few days ago for my daughter's formal ball. Everybody present had a smartphone. I formed the thought that if those were not phones but guns I wouldn't be feeling very safe at all. I wish the US well. Might help keep us all safe.

@rwba @TonyStark I think since virtually everyone on the left and center cares about dead kids, many of us believe the right must care about dead children. But as North Carolina's lieutenant governor's statements show -- the GOP is not above mocking survivors of shootings (or dead victims).I've started to notice a shift on the left to recognize that Republicans not only don't care about shootings, but actively don't mind them if it is advantageous politically in some way.

@TonyStark Exactly. The only variable that’s different is the availability of guns.

@Toniboloni @TonyStark Look, either America is a sick sad country out of all the countries in the world because this happens so often there and nowhere else...or it's the guns.

@seldear @Toniboloni @TonyStark It's the guns, 100%. But even with no guns, we need to work on some stuff in terms of toxic values and politics. We're in a bad way.

@stopgopfox @TonyStark this is what happens when good parenthood is replaced by guns, when education is replaced by guns, when civics is replaced by guns, when ethics is replaced by.. guns... when self-confidence and fashion trends are replaced by guns..

@stopgopfox @TonyStark I would agree, except for 'become'.Not to be unduly optimistic, but I think the change is that toxic masculinity is seen (by some people anyway) as a problem.George Custer and Andrew Jackson were heroes in their day precisely because they were bloodthirsty thugs.

@davidpmaurer We have and did. It gets watered down by Republicans. Feel free to name the time this could have happened otherwise stop spreading nonsense and ruining any fucking chance of making this better. It’s this kind of bullshit that literally kills us.

@davidpmaurer That’s a two year old article and we have since then. This is the time where you can say “maybe I was wrong” as I have done myself numerous times when I’ve said something incorrect. Get off the train where you have to die on a hill upon which you are wrong. This kind of stuff, I repeat, continues to contribute to our inability to solve the problem and start saving more lives.

@TonyStark i'm perfectly willing to be schooled, especially on an issue i care deeply about. i'm probably behind on a lot of it. my real point is that despite the fact that 80% of us want more gun control, voting for it alone won't make it happen. we have to make sure enforcement is funded and that local pd's actually do that. most enforce laws selectively. that's a real problem.

@davidpmaurer@mastodon.sdf.org Law enforcement is definitely a problem and that’s already discussed elsewhere and I mention it often. If 80% of us bothered to vote, we’d have better results. 80% of us can want whatever we want, but if turnout is below 60, 70 for a Presidential election and around 20 to 30 for a local, that’s on the voters. We need to fix that part and now. The reason we have little power is that we’ve done this to ourselves.

@GwladysPendlebury Well, that’s a long answer but I post about ways to get out the vote and reasons to vote that can be used and are shareable often. Help people register and vote. That’s the start. Support good government where it happens and restore faith in good government. It’s pretty complicated as I’m sure you would imagine but we can directly have an impact.

@TonyStark I’ve spent a couple of hours trying to figure out how to deal with the ID issue, but I can’t come up with a workable solution. Problem below. I’ve had this issue in my own family, and frankly if I had to start from scratch, I’m not sure I could come up with the required documentation. First comes first- get people IDs, but how? We’re not a democracy if we can’t vote because of roadblocks.https://www.aclu.org/fact-sheet/oppose-voter-id-legislation-fact-sheet

@GwladysPendlebury Yes, that’s a huge problem. Here’s an organization I’m involved with that helps: VoteRiders: Voter ID Help • VoteRidershttps://www.voteriders.org/I promise you I write about these things often.Secondly, yes, the ACLU is worth supporting. And we can elect people to government who will uphold voting rights and fight voter suppression efforts like burdensome ID. We show it at voter registration. That’s enough.
