If it was, then maybe we should introduce more drugs to eliminate drug addictions or give vehicle licenses to minors to eliminate auto accidents or maybe just start handing out liquor to the youth to eliminate alcoholism. Their arguments are delusional and just another definition of MAGA GOP insanity.

There's plenty of data on this; access to guns increases gun violence.If you want to decrease gun violence while preserving access to guns (which I do) you have to fix all the other things which increase violence in society, like isolation, inequality, lack of education, lack of healthcare, lack of green space, lack of exercise, car-centric design, pollution, etc. Etc.So, that's what I'm working on!

And unlike the USA, the Chinese government took action.They didn't do something stupid and impractical like banning knives, though, because knives, unlike guns, are actually needed in day-to-day society. And again this didn't mean X-raying children's backpacks. It meant providing security gates, security guards, and mancatchers (NOT GUNS!) in the security room and/or classrooms.It took about a year for all schools to be brought up to code, and the cops did extra work around schools in the mean time.(...cont...)

And since then there hasn't been a school attack of note.Total period of increasing risk: 3 years; effectiveness of implemented solution: 11 years and counting without a major attack.And note: the solution involved arming security guards and teachers ... with polearms.

I’m one of the armed locals. Stay out this is not your place in those events.That said? I think the sheriff should hold regular training and all that. Get to know the people and help, be involved all that. There is objective reasons for firearms. However I’ve seen so many just unlocked with kids around. I was fixing a RV and saw the gun on the floor next to the drivers seat. The owner yelled at the kid for going near it. It’s like lock the thing and don’t have shit in the chamber?

As an example: the Munich shopping mall OEC attack.The crucial point is not the gun, it's the will to kill. @jeberWell, before we decide to focus on one of several topics, we should assess the effort/benefit ratio. In the US, with so many fed states, it is a hard struggle to get a strict gun control. If you see the guns per person ratio and compare it to countries with stricter laws, you might wonder if number of homicides are not rather low in the US.Most gun owners don't kill.Another problem: most homicides are committed with illegal guns. Astonishingly, the number of illegal weapons is much higher than in countries with strict gun controll.Those mass shootings are more related to mental health than gun ownership. My conclusion: good access to health care, both physically and mental, will do a better job than gun controll.Though it is strange for us European, that you can buy an assault rifle at shopping malls in the US. @Sundae_Gurl @amarg

We should be able to increase mental health care while at the same time passing sensible gun licensing, training, and insuring laws. We also need to educate against the scare tactics of the right that have people being afraid to get a cup of coffee without packing.

@jeberSome sources I read told, that most illegal weapons were loophole guns, deliberately sold without registration. I never checked that, because US inner affairs get not most of my attention. However, my view from outside as a foreigner is, that the USA has a society of strict rules, based on obedience and conformity, and this sets the risk of amok behavior very high.That's why I think, more rules and more strictness will not work the way it's expected.Not to worry about food, housing, medical care and so on will, imo, create a more laid back attitude. @Sundae_Gurl @amarg
