It's really wild watching Twitter die in real time. There have been a lot of "this is probably it" moments, but pulling blue checks from notable accounts and simultaneously giving an algorithm boost to the junk accounts buying blue checks just destroyed the whole thing.I'm not seeing the accounts I want to see, my followers don't see me.

Twitter had such a good thing going for itself in terms of free content provision by celebrities and writers that people actually wanted to hear from. And instead of monetizing that, Elon alienated them thoroughly. Just to... what?Get a few stans and desperate opportunists to pay him $8?

It's always hard to distinguish between malice and incompetence, especially with someone so narcissistic. But I think the guy really is so self-centered, my best guess is that he truly believes that everyone wants what he wants, or would if he showed them how to get it.He thinks because he wants far right troll content, the rest of us do, too.

It's not so much a question of malice versus incompetence as it is a question of a malicious person's narcissism fueling incompetence. The content he likes is malicious, and he can't imagine people NOT liking it themselves.Because he doesn't have enough ability to think outside himself and consider differing viewpoints truly existing.

That's part of what was going on with the Twitter Files nothingburger.Twitter killed maliciously false content that he personally would have enjoyed, and he can't imagine that the rest of us would have thought that to be a good thing. He can't imagine we wouldn't want to live in his little disinformatic troll world of reactionary white guy grievance.

The whole thing reminds me of how Thiel used Hogan to kill Gawker for being a little too willing to reveal uncomfortable information about the rich, and I don't think that's a coincidence. My bet is that Thiel was only to happy to play Elon (and his wealth) into killing Twitter, which for better and worse has functioned as a forum where us peasants could hold the very privileged accountable.

And that, to me, is the real loss.We can rebuild community, but it remains to be seen whether there will ever again be such a popular online space that can be used to pressure corporations and politicians into altering their courses of action.Twitter was a hostile space for liberatory work, but it was also a digital playing field we could actually win on.

@gwensnyder @jacobrogers256 Thankfully! The sooner the people realise it’s what they thought Twitter was and get in here, the better. But slow organic growth is probably best for Fedi anyway, realistically. I wonder if one day people could spin up temp fedi servers on mobile devices and have large p2p networks with many small nodes that can’t be disrupted by governments in crisis.
