Is there any way to single-ticket book a train from London to small Spanish cities? trainline doesn't seem to believe a bunch of the Renfe services exist, and Renfe doesn't seem to ticket Eurostar.

@mjg59 My dutch railways app shows a bunch of trains from St Pancras to Granada, but only on May 31st and none are bookable online, they all seem to require phone calls.

@michael Oh, thanks! For the journey I'm interested in it suggests taking Euskotren, which isn't bookable online but meh. I was expecting to be able to single-ticket via Barcelona or something.

@mjg59 @michael Euskotren is afaik basically local traffic (even if as such the trains run quite a long distance), so no need or way to “book” in advance, any more than you would book a trip on TfL services in London in advance.

@mjg59It's nice to think it would be possible to just tap in and then tap out at the destination without a significant price penalty for not advance booking.I would have thought that say London to Barcelona would be an easy book? Then grab ticket for last leg on your phone during the journey? There is also the matter of most UK citizens not having an EU passport..

@tml @michael Yeah, but there's also actual trains to Bilbao which aren't offered

@mjg59 the problem is you have to travel through multiple different networks and European rail doesn't always play nice with each other. You can do London to Barcelona pretty easily via Eurostar/SNCF but after that it might just be easier booking separately to your final destination once you're already in Spain.

@mjg59 @michael As far as I see on https://www.euskotren.eus/sites/default/files/horarios/Euskotren_E1_Amara_Matiko-CARTEL_50x70cm_INVIERNO%202022-version%203_1.pdf all trains between Amara station in Donostia (San Sebastian) and Bilbao stations stop at all stations, there are no faster trains.

@tml @michael Right, I'd be routing via somewhere other than San Sebastian in that case

@mjg59 @michael The Renfe route would go a wide contorted path on non-high-speed lines via Miranda de Ebro and takes more time than the Euskotren one.

@mjg59 by the other posts, if you are going to Bilbao, if boat is a possibility, you could do somethong like Portsmouth - Bilbao? https://www.brittany-ferries.co.uk/ferry-routes/ferries-spain/portsmouth-bilbao/

@mjg59 Eurostar seems to be the usual blocker. Got London-Lausanne tickets via Paris at the swiss railways' counter: two different tickets anyways. Trainline also doesn't allow you to direct book Edinburgh-Paris for instance.
