Bluesky is going to skyrocket to mainstream popularity and actually replace Twitter, and Mastodon cannot, because Bluesky is being designed to be simple, fun, and — most importantly — easy to understand.

I’m not trying to provoke. I like Mastodon, especially using @ivory, and I love the community I’m in here. And maybe our community will stay here. What makes Mastodon good for us nerds is that all the non-nerds aren’t here. But it’s obvious already: regular people instantly grok Bluesky. They’ve had months to sign up for Mastodon and haven’t — because they don’t understand it, and what they see of it doesn’t look like fun.As soon as they see Bluesky they start trying to score an invite code.

@gruber Oh, and: it supports freaking quote tweeting. Which, I would argue, is central to how some very engaged users use Twitter. I really think the Mastodon community made a big mistake in assuming quote tweeting was only associated with abuse.

Bluesky: “If you liked Twitter, you’ll love Bluesky.”Mastodon: “If you hated Twitter, you’ll like Mastodon.”Hundreds of millions of people liked what Twitter once was, and what it aspired to be. Bluesky might be that.

Bluesky, in both word (stated intentions) and deed (the nascent service as it stands today), aspires to be a better Twitter. An idealized Twitter, perhaps. It even looks just like Twitter — without all the crap.Mastodon was created by and for people who wanted something different from Twitter. So when Twitter refugees show up, it doesn’t feel familiar. Because it’s not supposed to.

If I’m right, I imagine conversations like this a decade from now:—Why is it named “Ivory”?—When Tapbots originally started it after Musk killed Tweetbot, it was for an open source social network called Mastodon. Get it? Mastodon… Ivory?—Huh.—They still support it. It’s just a different account type.

@buzz @gruber They just announced it this week. I'm not sure about the timeframe, but it's the first time we have official confirmation that quotes are coming.

@gruber BlueSky sends everything you post to an AI company called The Hive for analysis. It's already showing its true colours as a VC tech bro platform designed to extract money from its users. It's Twitter all over again alright.

@gruber that’s why I’m convinced Mastodon and BlueSky can co-exist (at least in my world). If Mastodon would replace Twitter it would need to entertain all the trolls and idiots, too as they make like 70% (feels like) of the user-base on Twitter. I’m happy with just having a few but good folks on Mastodon. Quality over quantity.

@danvanmoll @gruberI want everyone here, block them if you want. Block their servers if they become the home bases for harassers. I want a decentralized old Twitter, and so much more. Journalism, and all other media, should exist on a decentralized network so everything can go viral, if we decide it should. Closed platforms are fine for hanging out with your friends, but this network enables worldwide attention democracy. Merit culture. The advancement of liberal democracy. It's special.

@gruber I think the problem is the definition of “nerd”. The context is whether (given a significant passage of time) whether or not the Fediverse or BS (or whatever in future) breaks out from the early adopters to mass adoption. I think the Fediverse is extending to non-nerds, yes, just slowly. It has a multi-year head-start over BS. Then again, BS has Dorsey, so that’s an unfair advantage.

Given you used the applicable hashtag here, i presume that you are indeed Following it, as am i... so why you don't get it in your Home is a puzzle to me 🤷‍♀️

@gruber @chidgey Dorsey has gobs of people with gobs of money willing to invest in what he does. I wouldn’t call that unfair, but it is a magic power.

@drdrang @gruber Fairness is an invented concept, I grant you, but in this context, it gives whatever Dorsey touches a popularity advantage over Gargamel, who was effectively no-one when he created Mastodon.

@buzz Another analogy: No pool tables in the Mastodon bar. Why? Because at the Twitter bar shitheads were getting into fights and breaking pool cues over people’s heads. The problem wasn’t the pool tables.

@Gte @gruber You’re characterizing the dialogues of millions of Mastodon users, but you don’t know what you’re talking about — literally. My interactions here are far more entertaining and engaging than on Twitter. Somehow the folks I’m communicating with managed to onboard last year and most of them landed on an instance called famichiki.jp, a name that has a rich history in itself. (mastodon.social was closed at that time.) You need more data to make these assertions.
