Still reading and hearing takes that Mastodon has “failed” as a Twitter alternative. Listen, it’s ok if it doesn’t work for someone—unlike Twitter, I think Mastodon requires more effort and cultivation to produce an experience that feels meaningful. It’s been worth it for me. But there is definitely a smell of…not sour grapes but people making broad assumptions based on their own experience while ignoring millions of other people. Will Mastodon top 100 million? Who knows. Who cares?

@glennf Mastodon is great precisely because wonks like that see it as “failed”. They have been kept out by the gentle Mastodon filter.

@glennf I find it fascinating how so many of the nerd/geek/tech community feel like Mastodon requires "too much effort" given how much satisfaction that community derives from geeking out on tech. It’s easier to understand coming from the non-geek world,

@WarnerCrocker A lot of folks who say that are saying it's too hard for others, which is interesting insight.

@glennf @WarnerCrocker The problem in 2023 is people seem to want instant gratification, so sign up to the fedi and find something they want instantly. It doesn't work like that, you need to post, addin tags, find and follow people. Learning anything requires effort and probably a lot of patience. Something rather lacking.

@glennf I’m increasingly unsure that Twitter is the only model worth copying. Maybe there’s still room for innovation.

@glennf Agreed. It's the for-profit, centralized mindset. Mastodon doesn't have to be profitable or take over the world. We use it and enjoy it. In my eyes it's already a success. We also don't have to worry about it being taken over or filing for bankruptcy due to "failure."

@glennf yeah. I also see a lot of those grapey people following very small numbers of folks. Unlike twitter I think you’ve got to follow a lot of people to get decent interaction here.

@glennf When #Twitter shuts down or is acquired, much will change... it's early days yet. Twitter took years to evolve.Do the world's #journalists want just one place to meet and compare notes? Yes, I think#Mastodon is the best fit for me by a mile, I love it here (again, *so far*, long road ahead)People like the freewheeling intimacy of Bluesky (where I just got on) but there are fewer than 100K users atm and we know that that won't scale.

The fediverse is a concept more like the original internet -- a bunch of little pieces that connect together independently without some broader authority exercising power over it.Short-sighted people would prefer their be an overarching authority because they imagine that they themselves would be in charge of that overarching authority. Whatever you think of Elon Musk, his takeover of Twitter is a perfect example of the fact that power changes hands, and some people will like the new powers, and other people won't, but it doesn't matter whether you like them or not they will be the ones with their boot on your neck.By contrast, a distributed system like the fediverse lacks and overarching power to implement policies that you would like, but also lacks and overarching power to implement policies that you don't like. Instead, individual operators get to choose how they want to run things in their little domain.

@Humpleupagus @sj_zero @maria @glennf these are people who absolutely need the corporate culture enforcement to exist on the internet. The possibility that they could be called a faggot is too much
