@stux there’s numerous countries with kings and queens. Some with presidents who’d just love to be called king. At least it prevents us becoming a dictatorship like many out there killing their own people at a whim. At least we have a constitution which is answerable.

@NatalieHopkins Yup, i prefer countries without a 'general' or single leader since it's from the pastKings, queens, presidents and dictators all have a thing in common.. Like here in the NL, we can do fine without a king since he doesn't really do anything anymore

@stux a head of state is a necessary democratic safety valve. Some countries have hereditary heads of state, some have elected them. I’m agnostic but for many it’s an important socio-cultural event which I can appreciate.

@stux I'm in a large northern city on Brexit Island. There are a couple of smallish events near the Town Hall (mostly being ignored). 😂Most ordinary brits are out trying to shop for fresh food in the supermarkets. You won't see that reported in mainstream media 🖖

I've written about something similar, that really what "freedom of religion" is, is an appeal to morality. In the 18th century, religion still made up the bulk of someone's moral foundation, so if you're given some latitude based on your religion, that means you're free not to participate in things that are fundamentally immoral to you.In this way, the reduction in religion has led to a fundamental dissolution of one of our fundamental rights because while there is a freedom of religion, there is no secular equivalent. This means that in losing religion, we've also lost a fundamental right to appeal to deeply held moral beliefs and refuse to follow laws we feel unjust.
