What's with this trend of apps telling you what you just did? When I hit "/" to hide the filmstrip, Lightroom throws an alert reading "Hiding filmstrip." When I paste from one app to another in iOS, it throws an alert "Pasting to #Flickr from Bear." When I like an image on #Glass, it throws an alert "Appreciation sent to So-and-So." Why??? I know what I just did - that's why I did it! I hate this #UI clutter that serves no purpose. What's driving it?

@shacker I think it is driven in part by the trend to "flat design" (and maybe a smattering of other recent trends, such as async/queued execution); the feeling of completion that used to be inherent to software interactions has evaporated, and these notifications may be an attempt to reassure users that, yes, the code is doing its job.

@kboyd That's a good point, at least for web apps. We know (even if not technically) that "it's processing in the background" so acknowledgement can be useful. But when I paste from one app to another in iOS? That's real time. Don't tell me what I just did!

@shacker in specifically the iOS paste case it’s because a lot of apps were ”spying” on the pasteboard contents for more or less benign purposes, and Apple added the popup to notify the user of what was going on

@shacker The iOS example may actually be a security feature, for malicious apps that might steal paste buffers.

@mikaeleiman oh, that is interesting, so it’s for security, not supposed usability. Thank you.

@dtauvdiodr I suppose that could play a part, good theory.
