(from the very beginning) Complete misunderstanding of the mutual dependence between modern social dynamics and _decentralized_ topology of fediverse. Modern (especially online) persona is a mosaic of various 'aspects". Work, family, neighbourhood, leisure time, guilty pleasures and deepest dreams -- each of them plays out in a different environment or community. They usually are (and certainly should be) compartmentalized, so only the person in question can easily see them all together.How does it translate into network services? Look...It also means that there is no place for huge "general purpose" instances. An instance should represent a well-defined community, ideally with a number of participants that warrants meaningful relations (Dunbar number X 1 step of separation). This is optimal configuration for people to get the best out of fediverse - and for fediverse to get the best out of people.Everything else is sorely suboptimal and means trouble we already are in.

@annaleen I've talked a few people who are tech savy enough to reinstall Windows through signing up because it wasn't sufficiently evident to them how to do it right.

@annaleen Choosing one's ideal instance could be automated in a way that asks your interests and makes suggestions. I think it's a barrier that could disappear with the right code.

@greenhombreThere are a number of servers for Aotearoa, and kiwis scattered across more general servers. So I made an Aotearoa List and I add every kiwi I follow to that List to get a local timeline for the country. Same with the city where I live. But what would be cool is if you could follow the local timeline of the Bay Area server, like you can with hashtags, or pin it as a List.Just in case nobody told you, you can move your account to that server if you want.@annaleen

@greenhombreI was thinking the only thing that would totally stop you hanging out with the folks on the Bay Area server is it silenced or blocked mstdn.social. Then I thought another thing that would be cool is being able to mute or block entire servers, *except* for @Cool.User@Cess.pit. So say if someone there is already following you when the server gets blocked, or X number of people, your account is excluded from the block.@annaleen
