As much as I talk about languages, the biggest revelations have been about how we are trained to write programs.With the right training you end up language agnostic, and can produce any program in any language, just building with arrays, variables and functions. The issue that universities and language designers are trying to overcome, stems from the fact that as the number of programmers working on a project increases, their individual effectiveness decreases. So they are trying to push everyone to conform to some unknown standardized template where each programmer contributes as a modular and efficient node of a programming team.This is doomed to never being able to pass some asymptotic limit of overall productivity. (they may have been expecting to push past this with AI, but it is clear that AI just introduces noise)Where as the true path lay in individuals blessed by God. They will grow in a vocabulary of generalized concepts, and become skilled at recognizing and abstracting away inflexible patterns.

It's a nice "actually write some code" language that mostly gets out of your way.It has a big Chinese userbase, so the trannies are kept at bay more than in other modern languages.

The not declaring variables is pretty common in interpreted languages. Javascript, Ruby, Python and shell scripts (sh,bash) are four I can think of off the top of my head that do it. Really easy to get things wrong.

The idea of generalized types isn't itself bad. Templates were a terrible implementation of it.The error messages are cryptic.It bloats the binary.You can't precompile a library that implements a templated type.

Precise GC is of course a big win, assuming the pause issue is/can be handled or is just not an issue.But for a supposedly modern language, error reporting by return values incurs a great deal of incidental complexity/extra code, plus of course the danger of forgetting to check (that can be addressed with tools). The generics story was also very ugly for a long time, donât know about what they finally ended up doing.(Thatâs being able to write one version of something ⌠generic that works on all relevant types.)

There were a lot of games doing fun stuff like I kid you not, loading up tons of TSRs for audio and then unloading them when you quit the game. Being DOS it wouldn't close cleanly, and so when you'd load Windows you'd get an error about device drivers from DOS and sometimes no sound.

Here we go, one used in many PC-98 games and the PC ports of PC-98 era games. How the driver would work is the game would be a .bat file, and then you would load the sound driver and auxiliary drivers (such as a PCM multiplexer) and then load the game. Think of it like how sound drivers were used on the Sega Genesis. Then on top of that, this was something that the entire 90s Japanese computer game industry did, including on the FM Towns and X68000 (a computer that was based on the m68k as well with a DOS clone). They'd write their own drivers, and then load a bat file to call the drivers before loading the exe. You can definitely learn to code in your own time, I'd wager everyone ITT self taught the vast majority of their knowledge because there's no curriculum that teaches you what you actually need to know.Programming is just writing instructions for hardware, every piece of code is either1. direct instructions to hardware2. indirect instructions to hardware by way of instructions to other software3. rearrangement of the first two that improves performanceIf you don't understand something you just need to find out which of the 3 things you haven't learned about, maybe it's some piece of hardware you didn't know existed, maybe it's a protocol you've heard of but never seen the guts of, maybe there's a mathematical reason why the code needs to be written one way and not the other. It's all pretty simple when you focus on slowly building your understanding.

I am trying, been reading On Lisp and Let Over Lambda nearly every day. They are so inspiring. Getting good and comfortable with emacs is next on my todo list (if you know a better way to learn it than, just using a reference card and making up stuff, I am all hears xD I feel like I'd gain a lot from a more guided tour, but when people are using emcas, they are doing things at 100 mph and it looks cool, but I've no idea how they did it xD). I've done a little CL coding with atom, but without the REPL and debugging via Marking with Sly, I just don't know how far I could get.
