Apparently someone is threatening to have the instance I’m on defederated if they don’t get rid of me, because I posted that the Mastodon DM system is dangerously broken and non-intuitive.So, if either of those things happen, it was nice knowing you all. (Well, some of you all, anyway.)

Also, analyzing software to understand the security and privacy implications of unexpected behavior is part of my research. I comment on that subject all time (not that you need to be an expert to be allowed to have opinions- anyone can and should). But if that kind of commentary bothers you, just block me already. And maybe grow the hell up.

That seems bonkers on its face, but there's a more serious underlying issue. Basically, it's obvious that, rightly or wrongly, something about me enrages a small but vocal community of people here.So I can either - alter my behavior to become so mild and agreeable that no one could possibly be bothered by anything I say, or- rely on my instance administrator and others to deal with a barrage of unpleasant, if often unfounded, complaints about me.Neither seems tenable or sustainable.

It's not just (or primarily) my instance that has to field these complaints. My employer (that's definitely George Mason University, by the way), regularly is forced to deal with weird complaints about stuff I've posted on social media.

@foxxtrot@dice.camp @lauren@mastodon.laurenweinstein.org @mattblaze@federate.social I think that "you need to spin up your own instance" has been a bad advice on the Fediverse for years, and at least it feels inappropriate to me (a tech solution to a social problem) so any conversation based on these premises feels as well slightly inappropriate, but because it's gone on a dozen of posts after that, I'd like to pinpoint that this instance admin could just (and my have) block Matt at his instance level anyway, so it wouldn't change much anyway.

The short answer is that if you're posting on someone else's domain name you're working for their online ranking, not yours. It may be fair for an employer who's paying you, but absolutely not as e.g. a Twitter user. You're also running server software that's developed to meet someone else's needs, not yours; in this context meeting one's own needs, for example symbolically by running this software on their own domain name, may help them to ground themself and focus on meeting their own socio-physical needs as the most literal form of autonomy.

@mattblaze When I wrote a post last week that was affectionately but vigorously critical of various bits of masto UX, I got a *ton* of responses from people who paraphrased my criticisms of the platform as personal attacks on them, and one from someone who said my argument was “classic fascist rhetoric,” which veers toward what you’re talking about.

But something about mastodon - and I’m not sure if it’s chiefly the federated architecture or simply culture that emerged early on - seems to encourage and amplify aggressive self-appointed policing to a degree that I’ve not seen elsewhere.
