Windows may be an easy platform to use for simple things, but as a developer, there are no operating systems with as much friction as Windows. Linux is a breeze in comparison.I have little experience with MacOS, and I find their UI very counter-intuitive and opinionated, but at the command line level it is easy enough to work with as well – for what I've had to deal with so far at least.#Windows #Linux #Programming #DevOps

@veronica What kind of friction do you see with Windows?

@LarsFosdal I'm not compiling a list, but I run into issues on a weekly basis at least, where I curse the fact that we have to use Windows at work.

@LarsFosdalA general point I can make is command line tools. Windows has improved a lot with PowerShell, but the bar for improvement was incredibly low with Command Prompt, so that doesn't say much. PowerShell is, as everything Microsoft, extremely verbose and clunky.Windows also lacks the repository infrastructure that Linux distros have. Sure, they are making improvements, but installing tools on Windows is still a major source of friction. Not to mention Windows' support for Open Source.

@veronica @LarsFosdal What could Windows's built-in package manager do better?

@tux0r @veronica I agree that PS can be quite verbose - but it is also insanely huge and extensible. When you design a function, you have the option to create less verbose alternative names to parameters, and you can create aliases for command names you use a lot. I love the almost functional nature of PS scripts.Installation - well, yeah - a lot of ways to do them, but winget is getting better. Ref. OpenSource - I find VS to be easy to use with regards to finding and including libs?
