Here's a #poll 🗳️ about #cycling 🚴 in an #urban environment.❓ Do you recommend wearing a helmet / protective head gear when cycling around the city?

@matt yes, only because a fall from a bike can be deadly and there're many helmets that are both small, nicely designed and functional nowadays

@matt Definitely. Friend of mine was nearly killed in an accident involving a car but for the helmet she wore decades ago. Have been wearing one ever since and got the boys to do the same.

@matt1. The available evidence does not support the hypothesis that helmets significantly increase the safety of (non-beginner) cyclists in a city environment.2. Helmets are not what keeps you safe on a bike. Situational awareness and negotiating traffic is. Learn how to ride straight while looking back. Use hand signals.3. Wearing a helmet is a valid choice. Not wearing one, too. Ignoring point 2 can get you killed either way.

@matt yes because any kind of fall onto the ground can cause severe head injury. But it should not be legally mandated because that causes over-policing against the most vulnerable of us.

@matt you can fall and bump the head and be grand, or get delayed concussion, or be insta-killed. Cyclists need to learn from motorcycles. ATGATT. All the gear, all the time.Delayed concussion and brain issues here from falling off a horse, and it was stationary. I was grand immediately after. But within 12 hours, I deteriorated significantly.

@matt Better safe than sorry. I also wear motorbike gloves, and a reflective vest when biking at night even though the road from downtown to where I live is quite well lit and my bike has lights at the front and at the back. I know it does not make me 100% safe but I prefer putting every chance on my side to avoid accidents and to protect myself in case it happens.(I should probably mention that bike lanes are either terrible or non-existent in my city)

@matt In western countries outside of NL and DK, seeing lots of people cycling both with and without helmets is the best sign of a healthy cycling culture.Everybody uttering something about cycling safety should have a look at the Cycling Fallacies site: https://cyclingfallacies.com/en/29/people-should-wear-helmets-when-cycling

@matt People have been brainwashed to believe that helmets are the ultimate thing to improve safety while cycling. So of course you get a fairly big majority supporting the message that people recommend helmets.Hopefully only a minority of those saying yes will pester strangers about helmets or complain on cycling pictures posted without helmets.

@morten7an This is partly why I'm asking; I got told that STATISTICALLY people are less likely to be in an accident whilst helmetless.Which, I dont have numbers to deny that (and imagine that changes from city-to-city).BUT, I wonder what the injury / death rate is of accident + helmet vs accident - hemlet.

I wish I had time to discuss with everyone in the replies to this poll, but I don't.I asked because as many have commented, it's (apparently) statistically less likely for you to be knocked off your bike if helmetless. However, I never hear people talking about the other point; it only takes one time to be knocked on your head to be seriously injured. So, idk, as someone that has come off their bike twice in 10+ years, I think WITH HELMET is the better option, personally.

And the Dutch / no Dutch thing? Well, its because I was having this chat in person with @shivani I know a lot of people in Netherlands have a very safe cycling experience because they have the infrastructure for that. But a lot of cities don't. So I wondered if it would make a difference to the polls and with 442 answers so far, not 1 Dutch person has said YES to wearing a helmet (but 3% of respondents said No + Dutch)

@matt The evidence on the (dis)benefits of wearing a helmet are inconclusive. I don’t think the research has moved on since this: https://www.cyclehelmets.org/1139.htmlHowever, there is a tonne of evidence showing cycling (with or without a helmet) significantly reduces your risk of death from all causes. So, if you are more likely to ride a bike if you wear a helmet, wear a helmet. If a helmet might stop you riding a bike, don’t. But for your own health, whatever you choose to do, ride a bike!

@matt @morten7an That may be an artefact of the types of rider that do and don't wear helmets. Fietsers tend not to wear helmets, but with a slower, less risk-taking riding style on upright bikes are less likely to crash and sustain head injuries. Wielrenners wear helmets, take risks and disproportionally end up in A&E.However, if 'make cycling safer' = 'reduce danger to cyclists' you have to look at where the danger comes from and it's overwhelmingly 3 sources: drivers, drivers and drivers…

@matt I'm in Norway. Kids 12-15 have to wear a helmet when using an electric scooter. Kids under 12 aren't allowed to use them. Anyone over 15 can choose to or not. There is no law about using a helmet while riding a bike. BUT... I was remarking to my husband the other day that it has been ages since I have seen anyone, especially any kids, not wearing a helmet when bike-riding.Mopeds is mandated, but some teens are "tough".. stoopid!Everyone's brain is worth taking good care of!

@matt I stopped asking, especially re: the Dutch. I wear a helmet in case I crash. I don’t think it will save my life in a major accident but it might stop me becoming paralysed or suffering brain damage in a smaller accident. I’m happy for the laws to go either way, I’d wear mine even if it was illegal. I agree we shouldn’t STOP at helmets, but I also think the helmet debate distracts us from the real enemy. The few accidents I’ve had I keep hurting my “groin”, maybe I need to wear a box too. 🤣

@PommesRotWeiss @raucao People keep coming at me with the "helmets do not statistically increase safety" and I keep thinking that I'd prefer a BONK! to the head WITH a helmet on than without one.Just like I'd prefer a car crash with an air bag rather than without one.

@matt I missed this at the time, but re: cycling helmets. I don't recommend either way, I leave it up to each person to decide. If I'm just pottering about the city on my town bike (exhibit a) then I don't, I just jump on and go.If I'm off for an adventure on my go anywhere bike (exhibit b) then I do.But mainly I object to shaming one way or another. Nobody ever asks people driving why they aren't wearing helmets despite it being more likely you'll get a TBI while in car.
