@boilingsteam I adopted a T440 years back and it was one of my most worth-it purchases I ever made. Touchpad sucks, keyboard's great, screen's okay, Linux makes it work 10 years after it's original manufacturing date.Would do it all over again.

@ste5e the T440 (especially the P model) is a beast. Love that one.

@boilingsteam I've heard that Lenovo has lists in BIOS of what accessories their laptops will accept. If something like a wifi or screen replacement isn't on the list, it'll be rejected.

@boilingsteam If you're fortunate enough to live close to a Microcenter, they sell refurbished Thinkpads on occasion. Right now they have a T480 for $350 and a T460 for $330. 16G of RAM.

@rotopenguin Yes, but there are ways to edit the BIOS these days, for certain models.

@boilingsteam That may well brick your laptop. Having to break the BIOS in order to shove PC parts with industry standard interfaces into industry standard PC-part-holes is bloody stupid.

@boilingsteam some good points here especially number 5 ;)but never buy the newest models until they have been on the market for at least 6 months if your primarily a linux userthis applies especially to the X1 Carbons. Lenovo likes to use the latest hw in these "mangement toy" models like intel cpu energy saving modes, i2c microphones [SOF hw]These usually have not been seem by the kernel devs or supported by the hw makers so you need those 4-6 months for the latest kernel to support

@boilingsteam I have an L480 now, and it's a perfectly nice laptop, but this kind of fuckery is something I don't want any more of. I'll go to Framework or System76 instead.

@rotopenguin good luck finding frameworks and system 76 laptops used for cheap. There is nothing so this means buying new at top pricing
