The authors conclude that the variability in the studies and the low adherence with the masking interventions means they can't say with any confidence whether the effect size estimate is at all accurate. That's a great paper to cite to show we don't actually know if masks work!

I do know that various sporting organizations required vaccine and there have been quite a few athletes who we almost have to assume were vaccinated that either died or lost their ability to play sports over the past few years. We also have seen a several ardent supporters of mandatory vaccination seemingly stroke out on camera. Is it possible there issues came from the virus and not the vaccine itself? Sure. It's also possible that the opposite is true or that both are factors.You are right though. It's impossible to answer. My problem is that sometimes when you don't have the answers the best action is to stand still and collect more data. Instead we are all supposed to take a leap of faith and hope the fall doesn't kill us, and anyone who has even a little hesitancy is brow beaten and treated as if they are somehow "anti-science".

It also doesn't do anything to make sure it works and there aren't long term effects. We also have plenty of people who have caught covid and do not have any of the autoimmune symptoms so there is a question of potential compound factors.It's possible the virus may increase a person's chances of developing these symptoms. It's also possible the vaccine does. It may also be the case that stacking these risk factors pushes some people over the edge. One big problem is that trust in public institutions (those collecting the data) is quite low and there is room for doubt on the accuracy of data reporting. This means even if the data actually seemed to support what you claim (I don't think it's that clear) there is still the question of whether the data was filtered to match a pre-made conclusion.

A moderate respiratory infection in the winter did not aggravate my condition either, which was improving at the time, the opposite which would be expected if this hypothesis has heavy credence.We know that Corona-chan's main attack vector is attacking the linings of blood vessels in the lungs, followed by, to a lesser extent, attacking the nervous system, so dealing with non-respiratory issues should focus on that, rather than anything researchers can grab hold of.

@feld Yeah, I guess for USA you get a lot of co-morbidities, probably would be better to look at data from Europe in terms of health situation.I guess it mostly means protecting people from low health as usual, people wearing masks in hospitals and retirement homes would make a lot of sense, even without covid being a thing.

@post @freemo @feld your point is flawed for many reasons:- first the summary of evidence of non homogeneous and low quality studies doesn't give you an increased quality of evidence, this is the foundation of MAs and they knew, so they state quite clearly what we can say and what we can not with those results- second, It seems that you miss the idea behind hypothesis testing and you are doing one of the biggest mistake in biostat: absence of proofs is not a proof itself

There are reasonable ways to reason about it where masks could even cause a greater soread of some diseases, maybe, when used by the general public and used improperly (whicb lets face it is most people).That said i think we can all agree we just dont have good studies that can show it was effective in the case of covid, but we do t have evidence it was ineffective either.

I think it's clear that is helpful in reducing spread.That doesn't mean surgical masks or cloth masks protect against these diseases, or me re-using a surgical mask that I leave in my car for a few days is at all a good idea.

@ech @post @freemo @feld The 2/78 studies included in that MA about masks and covid show masks work. They also included a Danish paper that apparently ignore the bidirectional cover from masks. Moreover the whole analysis is about policies and they clearly state about adherence. A bad application of a policy doesn't prove it doesn't work. @post here is mixing up on topics to avoid the specific issues. That way to claim proofs could demonstrate everything.
