When people tell you they generated their slides or parts of their talk with "AI", just getting up and leaving is the most polite thing you can do. When the text is generated, just close the tab.Don't waste your time on stuff not even the "authors" cared to create.

@tante what if I only use AI to generate stock images on my slides? They're meaningless anyway. Plus the audience gets to spot the hands with too many fingers!

@tante Just let an AI summarize the slides to save time.

@tante I generally agree with where you are coming from. But could you say the same about an extensive quote? For me, the main question is are people making an argument they are talking seriously? Something they are ready to care, defend and argue for? If so, I don't really care how they make it, or where the material comes from. What I truly hate is abdicating responsibility to the machine (or, frankly, the boss).

@festal I think a quote (like using reference images in Design) is qualitatively different from synthetic, statistics based content. I'm not saying that these tools have no value in a cognitive and work process but I've seen so much text that was generated "just as inspiration" that basically defined the bones of texts and talks. I think people overestimate how good they are not taking the bait, they overestimate how much they will change the ChatGPT in editing and then wonder when they get criticized for the thoughts and ideas embedded in the text they proudly presented. (And of course there's the whole novelty "look the last paragraphs/images were generated by AI and you didn't realize it" shtick with I personally find so insulting that it makes my blood boil)

@tante If they instead shared the prompt, they could save everyone so much time with less infringement and more respect.

@tante it's such an interesting space at the moment. Just like on social when people have to declare they've been paid to post, there should be a mandatory label to let people know that AI was involved in the creation of anything.

@tante I have a problem with authors not disclosing the origin. Which is unfortunately quite common. Only a few do it because they are convinced "AI" is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

@arguil Why are you adding meaningless pictures to your slides? @tante

@tante My bosses expect me to follow the corporate design which asks for meaningless pictures on the chapter divider pages. Those can be made by Dall-E, if you ask me.Apart from that very specific fix for a problem created by the suits, I fully agree with you.

@tante Mostly I agree. I can think of one exception: a nonnative speaker might ask an LLM to rewrite their text in grammatically correct English (or whatever language is needed). That is the one thing LLMs are good at.

@tante AI is just another tool that helps us do work. If this tool can source more references and bring together useful information faster than me I am all for it. If a contractor showed up to my house with power tools to help them do their job faster instead of doing the work by hand I would not expect the work to be lower quality. We should be using better tools when they are available. The contractor will still review all work to ensure it is up to their standards.

@tante I’m intrigued to know which part of this AI surge is self-generated & not programmed by humans.

@tante All I have seen produced is pretty bland and banal. But then a lot of what we produce in the modern era is bland and banal. They is no stopping the AI parade and if as a tool it helps produce good work then so be it. But perhaps it might prompt a new era of clear, direct and authentic communications that sets good work apart - the demise of the waffle and the stock images that kind of just fill the page.
